That's the trouble with today's politics in the UK; it's now Presidential. Far to many think it's an electoral college, and MPs elected simply to appoint the PM.
Jeremy Corbyn would be first to agree, he isn't the Labour Party and doesn't dictate its policies. I'm not sure Mrs May could say that with any conviction.
(Tim Farron knows he's not the LibDems but he does in LibDem style make up policy - literally.)
