What's wrong with that?? Its actually old news and West Berkshire Council are only just catching up with Newbury Town Council's vision. The basic concept is very good indeed - we all presumably want Newbury to be a great place to live, which demands a vibrant local community. For years, Newbury has made its name by being a 'major stop' on the way to somewhere else. This is simply refreshing and reinventing that concept. That vision says we should protect and develop our Georgian architectural heritage - which makes Newbury special. Again, very different from the Victoriana so favoured elsewhere. Good to see this taking off again - perhaps some joined up thinking for once! Sincerely hope we don't revert back to the 'draggle tailed bomb site' approach that was apparent when I first set eyes on this town 30 years ago.

That's a good idea. We could call it the Newbury Town Centre Steering Group.

Now, haven't we been down this road before?

Why does a vibrant community make it a great place to live. I've seen plenty of places the have a vibrant community (Bootle for example - certainly vibrant but not pleasant) but I wouldn't want to live there! That's probably not what you meant though.
Maybe what we really want is a place that is safe and provides the things that give a comfortable living. If you are suggesting that having tourists arriving daily then I for one wouldn't be happy with it. What's wrong with Newbury being a stopping of point to somewhere else? Does that make it a bad place? Does it have to busy and commercial to be a great place to live?

Hear, hear. There will be a time when dull and ordinary will be coveted.

His are just words to justify the rape of Newbury.

Car parking revenue has increased?

Well they have just put the parking charges up and also banked a great wodge of cash from those unfortunates who are too blind to see the signs on Parkway Bridge.

In a previous version of the Vision transport was to be integrated with the bus station in the train station car park. Dissapointed to see under the new Vision it will be further away in the Wharf.

I very much like the idea of the development of the warf area and making a much bigger feature of the canal. I also like the idea of making more of our civil war history, I've often thought that there should be an interpretation centre in Wash Common, which could also interpret the bronze-age mounds and maybe even the enclosures too. That could all be linked up with the town with a designated path up through Enborne, across Wash Common, and maybe back down Old Newtown Road, and maybe tied in to the second battle site in Speen, though that would be quite a long walk - is there a path along the Enborne east from the Castle?

Edit: and thinking about it, maybe that path could extend over to Greenham Common and pick up the history there too, then come down through Greenham and back along the canal.
