I see two guilty parties here.
One is the retailers standards, the other is stupid consumers who think if the use by date is reached, it turns to poison.

Wholly agree, it's monumental madness. Made even worse because we actually import so much of this stuff.

Very little gets thrown away in our household. If 'bits of fur' start to grow on some of the food in the fridge because it's been kept a little bit too long or if the potatoes start to grow legs then those bits can be picked off before cooking. I must admit though that we have jars and jars and jars of herbs and spices, some of which were probably bought over ten years ago (or more!) I reckon I really should get round to popping those in the bin. (Though I'm reluctant to do that even)

Do what we do, anything that looks a bit dodgy, Chuck it in a stew. Hour or two and anythings safe. Well, I'm still here! Food waste is an abomination!

Totally agree with every comment.
I make soups with frogs and toads and puppy dog's tails!

If it is in a sealed pot then unless it is showing pressure (gas given off by microbial activity) it gets eaten. Yoghurt / cartons of juice etc, meat you can sniff (but allow the smell of the" packaged in a controlled atmosphere dissipate" first), Veg just trim off iffy bits and cook the rest. Bread products are fine unless they have a fur coat - can always toast it or if too stale breadcrumb it and use for a gratin

But i love those who won't buy things near a "best before" or "use by" date - they are why i can get end of day knock downs

Hmm yeah actually I never eat anything even 2 days before it's date - best not even buy it if it is within a week of the date - heed my words (all of you please)

That is definitely a wind up comment.

But, in the event you are an idiot, which I doubt, how did the human race get to 2015 without sell-by dates, use-by dates?
