The owners of the Bricklayers pub are flouting planning rules and painting the outside purple and lilac (is there a 60s revival fashion at present?). When are we going to get some planning laws that protect our listed buildings and conservation areas???

See http://www.newbury.net/forum/m-1258635179/s-0/ for a picture.

That is ghastly. But according to that thread, the council have issued a stop notice. (The post saying that has only just been made.)

Yeah - I got a response from an email to WBC just after I started the thread. I hope the painter didn't get much more done than the section shown in the picture.

There are and the authorities have, quickly!

Trouble is that like any law, people dont warn that they about to break one, so it cant be dealt with until it is happening and the appropriate authorities know about it.

Ok?

The window frames are back to white again this morning. Not sure how they are going to get rid of the lavender walls though.

In the great scheme of things whether the Bricklayers is yellow, green, purple, mauve or red does not bother me that much. They can even put polka dots on it. What does bother me is that the clientele are respectful of others and don't cause trouble. Pubs are struggling to exist and need a 'niche' to help get custom. Or do we want all pubs to close? sad.gif

Mind you, I walked past there yesterday morning and it's hardly in a picturesque area of Newbury. Across the road is the monstrosity that houses Iceland and the row of adjoining shops. Some conservation area!

A hideous building indeed - if only it had been a conservation area when that was going through planning. At least they removed the tower block.

Then again, it probably was when they allowed the Kennet Centre to be built ...
