Does anybody know why the rubbish collections are done during the morning rush hour? surely it would be better for all if these were done between the hours of 9-5 i.e. normal working hours.

I believe it reflects an agreement to embrace "flexible working". The crews want to start and finish early.
My recycling gets picked up before 7-30am which I think is fine.

This flexible working though is not great at these times down roads such as Craven , Russell and Gloucester Rd as their vehicles block the road. Surely it would be easier for all concerned to just wait until it gets quiet.

And as for finishing early, maybe they should spend a bit more time doing a proper job rather than rushing to get home to watch Jeremy Kyle, as this morning I saw rubbish going everywhere!

Write to the Council if you feel that strongly about it.

Ditto Boundary, Railway, Stanley, Livingstone, York and Queens Road area.

I don't know if other areas of the town with "tightly packed" communities have thiers collected before 9, but would imagine they would be affected in the same way too.

Most inconvenient.........

Surely, if it's in the morning, the traffic is nose to tail anyway and a refuse wagon in the queue isn't going to make any difference?

No pleasing people on when they collect.

"It's too early"
"It's too late"
"It's the middle of the day"

Of course they could do it like many US cities do - overnight.

When we were in Majorca they had a great system. There were two of the large commercial bins parked in the road, one for recycling and one for non-recycling. These were emptied about midnight, every night. Meant no smells or flies and most of all you did not need an army of wheelie bins outside your house. They also picked up large items, such a sofa's and fridges every night, you just put them next to the bin.

People have enough trouble getting their own bin to the kerbside, never mind having to walk to a communual bin at the end of the street.

I think they do this all over Spain, seems to work well too.

Perhaps it's time we tried it here too, could save us all a few pennies.

Just a quick point on the finishing early comments -- once the refuse has all been collected, it still needs to be taken to a sorting depot (Eversleigh) by the driver so whilst he drops off his crew he has to keep going. As do the people working at the depot. If they started later everyone else would then be working later as well to compensate.
