The Games of the NewburyToday 2012 Legolympiad: Perseus against Theseus

The proposition is: Victoria Park would be better managed by a charitable trust of volunteers.

Arguing for the proposition is Perseus, and arguing against the proposition is Theseus.

When the heros have completed their contest a poll will open in this thread, so please vote for the hero you feel argued their position the best. The thread will be open for comments then too, though please try not to comment until the debate has finished. Many thanks.

I'm sure this will all become clear. What we seem to have is two mythical Greek figures, Lego and a series of burning Newbury issues connected in some way. Perhaps you could explain a little more Mr Kirby.

Why does he need to explain it all again? Read his previous posts on this issue.

However, it does seem over the top to run all debates simultaneously - they are swamping the forum.

Perseus says:

I feel open spaces that allow free use to all should be organised by other than a Local Authority.
I have knowledge that parks and playing greens gifted to the community almost 90 years ago
have been almost sold off. A Charity of Volunteers that would scrutinise such schemes would
be beneficial. The local Authority could be contractually obliged to maintain such a park.
I am sure a transfer of funding would not be troublesome.
After all I can pay a bill in moments.Perseus

Theseus says:

Victoria Park should be maintained and management by the local council. Our local parks and gardens are maintained by professional gardeners and throughout the year it is a pleasure to walk through them. Around the bandstand in Victoria Park especially the flower displays are stunning, a fine testament to the hard work done by the gardeners. If a charitable trust was to take over Victoria Park, training would have to be paid for and health and safety considered. The volunteers would be free to leave at a moment’s notice, meaning the cost of more training for volunteers.
The council would find it easier to bid for money that could be shared throughout all the parks and gardens in the area, where a volunteer trust would not necessarily have the knowledge to the same. The same goes for plant and equipment, the council use the equipment on multiply sites, where Victoria Park volunteers would need to purchase equipment at onset.
