QUOTE (NORTHENDER @ Jan 9 2013, 07:41 PM) With Jessops shutting which could be as soon as tomorrow I had better get there sharpish. I have a Nikon D5100 in there for repair. A couple of weeks ago I bought a new and expensive camera from them. I also took out a 3 year guarantee. I bought it from them because they knew what they were talking about and I liked the service. First I went to Curry's and they didn't have a clue and their service was appalling. It will be sad if it does close. With Comets gone and Jessops going it will mean that Curry's will have a monopoly.

QUOTE (GMR @ Jan 9 2013, 09:14 PM) Another question; where do we stand on guarantees taken out? Read the detail. Manufacturer warranty will be unaffected, but less convenient. Extended warranty is usually an insurance. Check with the supplier. (I had one, the supplier was Domestic & General)

First I went to Curry's and they didn't have a clue and their service was appalling. What has done them in, as it has with many specialist shops that are now boarded up, is that people go in there for some great advice, spend ages having a feel for which camera is comfortable and then walk out the shop saying "I'll think about it and come back tomorrow!" only to log on to Amazon and get it cheaper. QUOTE (GMR @ Jan 9 2013, 08:57 PM) It will be sad if it does close. Too many people just do their shopping online. My daughter seems to JUST buy her clothes and shoes online when you'd think it would be easier to go in a shop and try that sort of stuff on... "Nah, if it doesn't fit it just gets posted back for free" All sorts of High Street shops are feeling the real retail squeeze from the 'Power of Amazon'

QUOTE (GMR @ Jan 9 2013, 09:14 PM) Another question; where do we stand on guarantees taken out? Normally guarantees & warranties are through a separate company so you should be fine. If it's a care plan you have, then that's provided by Domestic & General (as NWNREADER stated) - http://www.jessops.com/Home/HelpDetail.aspx?id=73

Received an email from them a few days ago saying the camera was repaired and ready to be picked up. It is not in the Newbury shop but a shop a considerable way away.

If you'd paid for a new camera and hadn't received it you might have some difficulty getting either the camera or your money because you have a contract with a company that's in administration, but when you put a thing in for repair it's still yours - it's called bailment - all you hand over is possession, not ownership. It might take some hassle finding where it is but I'm sure you'll get it back in the end. Best of luck. It's a shame Jessups has gone, I found it to be a helpful, competent shop, particularly for getting prints made.

With Jessops closing there won't be any specialist camera shops around (at least in Newbury). Granted you can go and google a hundred different camera's but a specialist can make it easier for you.

Granted you can go and google a hundred different camera's but a specialist can make it easier for you. There is a camera shop on Cheap Street, left hand side as you approach the station from town. It also sells specialist whisky!
