Last night James freeman announced that as of the 27th of august newbury buses will no longer run any of the following routes

6/6a
8/12
The link

Consultations will begin later this week for the 14 drivers faced with compulsory redundancy.

The routes affected will be taken over by other company's subject to agreement.

Were these routes 'viable' / profitable or were they loss making? Which other Company will touch them if they are loss making?

I don't think that the Link was loss making because it was usually fairly busy whenever I saw it at the bus station. I suspect that the other services weren't doing quite as well although the £1 into town singles have probably helped to boost trade a bit. In my opinion Reading Buses didn't really want to be in Newbury any more after losing many of their routes to Heyfordian/Newbury & District. Withdrawing these remaining services means that they can close their Newbury depot while still operating the profitable Jet Black/1 service out of the main depot in Reading.

The official line is that newbury buses overheads are higher than other companies most of the extra overhead is deadwood management in reading.

The link costs money to run and all the others too many council passes and not enough full fares.

I thought the Jet Black service was a Newbury based service run by Weavaway up on Greenham.

Not a thread about busses in months and then two come along at once.

It's run by Newbury/ Reading buses & Newbury & District(Weavaway). But the buses all belong to Weavaway

I wonder if this is sabre-rattling by the bus company to get more subsidy from West Berks Council?

I don't think so, as James Trinder said Reading Transport has never wanted to be in Newbury, they have been trying to get rid of their Newbury counter part for a while now.

Either that or walk. Or you will have to drive them.

Well, another one who will have to find another form of transport.

Really? That's the official line? That there is too much deadwood management in Reading?

We are better off without Reading Buses. The one sad thing about this is the 14 staff who will possibly lose their jobs. Jet Black is sub contracted out to Weavaway / Newbury & District by Reading Buses. The only services provided by Reading Buses now will be Vodafone, which is obviously a money spinner. I've said for the last year, let's look at the bus network from scratch and put it all out to competetive tender. All that has happened from what I was saying is that Reading Buses have made such a mess of it all that they are now pulling out.

Who's up for a social enterprise bus company, run similar to the urban / rural bus challenge schemes?

I thought the Guardian readers were meant to be encouraging us all away from private means of transport and on to public ??
