What do you all think?

If it works, great. But I can already visualise them being punched in the face by the louts we have in Newbury.

Would a drunk girl/bloke really want to chat away their problems to some stranger in the street? How would the Pastors stop anti-social behaviour?

I don't think it is needed, and a waste of their time.

Sadly I think you are right however I would be great if it does work. Have to keep an eye on this to see how long it lasts and if it is effective.

I'm sure Newbury has something like this anyway. It was only last winter that I was offered Hot Chocolate from some Christians in the Market Place, and I've seen them wandering around every so often since.
A pretty depressing way to spend your free-time I'd imagine, but if that's what they want to do, then I don't see why anyone would be against it.

I am against it because I actually think they would come to harm. On Saturday night my friend witnessed a bloke holding a girl up by her throat against the wall. He interferred (wrongly or rightly) and got punched in the face and ended up at the police station. The girl never pressed charges 'cos she had to get home to the kids'. If a Pastor was there what could they of done?

I think you have got 'Pastors' muddled up with 'Vigilantes' there.
They will be "offering them a prayer and someone to talk to", and although it mentions them dealing with anti-social behaviour, I wouldn't take that too literally.
If this does become official as opposed to the few that I have previously seen around, then I expect they will be given some kind of contact bridge with the Police.
But I still don't see why anyone should be against it. If that's what they want to do with their time, then so be it.

No I haven't.

I know what is says they will be doing, but I fear for their safety because Newbury is not a 'nice' town at 2am when they are trying to offer someone a prayer.

Of course, if they want to use their time doing it, fair play. I just don't feel Newbury is the right place for it. I can just see them having the piss taken out of them, shouted/laughed at etc.

I'm sure the street pastor concept has been tried in places far more dangerous than Newbury.

Perhaps they could try and sign people up to donate to charity at the same time? wink.gif

Sounds a good idea. I might take up my book and go amongst the multitudes and preach the way to righteousness. Everybody needs a good laugh, especially at Christmas. And besides, there would be more of a reason why I would be accepted than the other pastors.

But that is what I did do.... and as you can see the results are there for everybody to see. You can’t beat Spec Savers. Everything is even clearer now. That is why I want to join the street pastors so that I can preach my good fortune to those less fortunate than myself (with even poorer eyesight).

May God with you my child. wink.gif

If a person who is doing wrong sees a street pastor, they just may stop and rethink their behaviour.

I don't think this is a bad idea, and until someone proves it is a bad idea, what harm is there with someone being there to talk to if your not having a great day...

How would one know what he/she was. Do they carry a sign board and mobile altar or perhaps they wave a gold cross. Sounds a bit like the wild west, as in the movies, to me. No doubt they can, after a night on the town, compare stories about how the drunken populace persecuted them but they forgave their transgressions.

Bring back the Spanish inquisition, nobody would expect that.
