QUOTE (Simon Kirby @ Aug 15 2017, 04:45 PM) *
I rather like the way comments can be addressed to specific comments and nest, so that a discussion can go off at something of a tangent without derailing the thread as a whole. FB also makes it really easy to post images as it hosts the image itself, and I like the way it renders a preview of links too. It's a better medium for discussion IMHO.

What I don't like about Facebook:
Searching for comments is tiresome.
You can't format text.
It is no less 'quarrelsome'. In fact I think it is more so than on here or other forums.
Profanity is rife.
Can't quote.
Fragmented debates due to being able to reply to individual replies.
Topics can quickly disappear off the foot of the page.

I think Facebook is a glorified messageboard than a forum.

Been fighting that battle on here for years SirW.
Good luck, although I have to admit things have improved on here from that aspect lately.
Perhaps due to the diminished number of contributors? unsure.gif

And therefore fewer daft/antogonisitc posts! tongue.gif

There will also be an element of people 'understanding' one another.

While Facebook has good reach, it is a rubbish platform for debate.

There was an interesting article on TV last about the folley of adherence to escalating GDP.

The same kind of reassurance the West Berkshire Council CEO made about Newbury football club.

Mind we've no room to gloat, didn't we do the same to England's old and massive oaks to build Nelson's navy?

Irritatingly, NWN are inaccurate with their headline: "Newbury community building will not be sold, council says."

No they didn't, they said: “It is the intention that the building will remain for community use".

So contrary to the headline, there has been no assurance at all that it won't be sold.

I don't like to slag-off the NWN, but on this the NWN headline is bovine excrement.

Now forgive me for being a snob but I buy free range chicken. The idea of buying a chicken reared in substandard battery farms before being dipped in Chlorine is hardly appealing. It may end up in some dodgy kebab or other fast food restaurant but I wont be eating any of that *****. I think the yanks will find that the Britsh people in general won't touch it with a bargepole.

I've eaten worse.

Yep; and a sad reflection on our national skills and capability! Post Brexit; what hope?

This was in-place before Brexit, so with the anticipated lack of inward investment, I see things being even more unlikely.

Advertising has ceased to be such a pain since the advent of a Sky box in my home - I rarely watch commercial TV channels live these days and find it easy to fast forward through the ads. Even when watching live I will often pause to make a cup of coffee, answer the phone, etc which then allows me to skip the ads for the rest of the programme.

For me, adverts have never been a bigger nuicence.

Oh dear, today's announcements seem to suggest that this problem will remain with us. Still, every cloud and all that, can't be long before HS2 is simply just a bad dream.

A part of the problem is having 'dual fuel' trains.

The licence fee is worth it if only to avoid the sunami of adverts on other live channels.

The tank was crushed and burst, atomising the diesel, then was ignited by the electricity lines. sad.gif

Biker1, have you seen the disaster documentary about the Ladbroke Grove accident? There was segment discussing the idea that the diesel tank was ignited by the live overhead electricity cables?

How else are they supposed to impress on the passing peasants the size of their plot? Anyway, without the "privileged few" this forum would have closed down years ago. biggrin.gif

I doubt the privileged few are without merit, but a society will hold itself back if we disproportionately invest in people based on abstract reasons like parenthood. It certainly isn't a civil one, if we effectively punish people who are disadvantaged.

My view is someone boasting of supporting a partly that supported a ~40% cut in a council settlement is taking a risk of causing offence. If a defaced placard is the worst they experience, it will be nothing compared to the experience victims of the cuts face.

Like a fox terrier with a much deceased rat, Tony Blair really can't stay out of the media limelight.
So now the re-moaners have some more ammunition to bore us senseless with.

We are leaving the EU period. History will show if this was a good idea, a bad idea or even no idea, but life goes on and the sooner politicians past and present get out of their pulpits the happier we all will be. angry.gif

I doubt that.

More people voted to leave, but there is no legal basis why we must. I think it is incumbent on politicians to take into account the views and welfare of all, not just the significant minority of eligible voters who voted Brexit.
