Am I the only one who has notices that the cost of diesel and petrol in Newbury has escalated dramatically? It was not so long ago that the price of fuel in Newbury was reasonable when compared with surrounding areas. Now the two main outlets seem to be in competition to see which one can have the highest price?

my daughter lives in Hungerford and works in Swindon and she said that petrol is cheaper in Swindon than it is in Newbury.

The recent rise is due to VAT reverting to 17.5%. This added approximately 2.5p/litre.

Interesting. Because when VAT was reduced to 15%, duty on petrol was increased so the price wouldn't drop. I haven't bought petrol since the 1st January - has the price gone up by this amount since then?

Be prepared for the price to rise significantly more by the summer as the government taxes it even more under the claim that it is to offset the cost of alleged "global warming"

Reading is much cheaper than Newbury but Newbury is the same as Basingstoke.

The motorist is the "golden goose" that will always provide additional funds in the form of tax for the government and profits to the oil companies.
There is little that you can do.
What I would like to see is road tax and insurance being added to the price of fuel to catch those that drive without either.

Tax would be a good idea. Insurance would be complicated - how would they factor no claims into the equasion?

Interesting info from www.petrolprices.com the price of fuel has never been lower than Reading but I don't recall it being as much of a difference as we have now. I noticed that when the superstore near the police station underwent refurbishment, the other one on the top of the hill rocketed their prices. I thought it would level off when the store reopened but I think they have worked out that we will pay no matter what the price is. I have now made a point of not using them I cant stop their price increase but I am not going to pay their prices.

So it has gone up - by a whopping 3p. Last time I looked it was 109.9.

Did I dream that when VAT was reduced, they increased fuel duty to stop it going down? If so, I assume they will be reducing fuel duty again to cancel out the increase.

How are things back on planet Earth, anyway?

Does anyone know why the prices are so different from places around, or is it that Newburys a soft target? Usually to save money i catch the train but its only a little cheaper to catch the train and its either late or has an irrelegular timetable. Buses never see them other then going through newbury town centre on a busy day, honking there horn at people.

I filled up today at Sainsburys and standard unleaded was "only" 110.9 per litre.

Now it's really odd that it's cheapest in Wantage, as unlike in Newbury there's hardly any competition,
opposite of the situation in Newbury with lots of petrol stations:

I agree with Biker1, it is easy money and we are too complacent to do anything about it. I drive past the very expensive stations (I am sure you all know the one) and there is a stream of cars filling up..!!? We hold the power...simply don't buy from the expensive outlets and the price will go down. I have seen this philosophy work very successively.
