QUOTE (tim @ Jun 21 2010, 10:22 PM) We have just observed a rather strange flying saucer like aircraft in the sky above north Thatcham. It was bright orange in colour and taking a route from west to east at 10 pm . Anyone else witness this ???? Did you notice if it was travelling at the same speed and direction as the wind. If yes, do not phone the UFO society but check out on Google "hot air lanterns" or follow this link http://www.partydelights.co.uk/sky_lanterns/sky_lanterns.asp

QUOTE (Good Boy Racer @ Jun 22 2010, 09:24 AM) They're always in the sky around Newbury and Thatcham Well, I've never seen one. Why would we expect to see them in these parts? There is hardly a huge Chinese population in this area.

QUOTE (JeffG @ Jun 22 2010, 09:50 AM) Well, I've never seen one. Why would we expect to see them in these parts? There is hardly a huge Chinese population in this area. People are always looking to do something different during or after a party/barbecue and a few drinks. I must say, I prefer the odd lantern going over to the huge explosions that are sometimes released into the sky just before midnight when I have just dropped off to sleep and I then have to spend ten minutes re-orientating myself and wondering if the house is about to collapse or if I have a burglar in the roof..

It's pretty dry in parts at the moment! Glad I haven't got a thatch roof with these about!

QUOTE (Iommi @ Jun 22 2010, 08:08 PM) I wonder if they are bio-degradable. Unless you consider livestock eating the remains (wire and all) recycling.

QUOTE (Darren @ Jun 22 2010, 10:24 PM) Unless you consider livestock eating the remains (wire and all) recycling. It's the hot air that keeps them aloft so providing there is no down draught wind then they stay afloat until the burner goes out. There has been some international discussions by farmers about animals ingesting the wire hoops and possibly the material they are made from. I believe now that all the responsible manufacturers use a bio degradable cover and support it with a lightweight wooden frame which if picked up by a grazing animal is light enough to be chewed up and will not cause harm. That's the theory anyway.
