QUOTE (user23 @ Jun 30 2011, 07:48 PM) The Newbury Labour manifesto promised West Berkshire residents a referendum on whether they'd like a district mayor or not.
Despite their embarrassing showing in the local elections they can still achieve their aim however as yet there's been no evidence of this happening.
Was this just a ploy to get residents to vote for them and do they they have any intention of fulfilling their promise? Considering that (as you like to remind people often) the vast majority of voters didn't vote for them, and it was an election pledge based on a win, I don't see they have any mandate to pursue the matter further.

QUOTE (user23 @ Jun 30 2011, 07:51 PM) It wasn't based on a win. So what is an election manifesto then? A list of things they will do regardless? I thought manifestos were a list of pledges for a party to prosecute, should they win an election?

For example the Lib Dems didn't win the General Election yet are still carrying out some of the pledges in their manifesto.

QUOTE (user23 @ Jun 30 2011, 08:08 PM) No, not necessarily.
For example the Lib Dems didn't win the General Election yet are still carrying out some of the pledges in their manifesto. That doesn't negate my point, although; as they didn't win, they cannot be bound to them either.

Regrettably User23 Regrettably Still, love Nick Clegg's brass neck - when he is claiming his successes. Against their percentage of the poll; in effect the LibDems are suverting the will of the people.

QUOTE (user23 @ Jun 30 2011, 09:52 PM) Of course it's not immaterial. It is immaterial because very few people appear to endorse their plan, so it could hardly be considered an election 'tease'.

QUOTE (Richard Garvie @ Jul 1 2011, 08:29 AM) You know the council are upset about Labour's weekly activities when it comes to resorting to a Labour Party thread on here. What a bizarre thing to post given the amount of threads you "resort to on here".

QUOTE (user23 @ Jul 1 2011, 04:24 PM) If one only posts something because it has "got up their nose" Richard must have a hooter the size of the Channel Tunnel. Truth is his own medicine doesn't taste that nice to him, it seems. We didn't get elected, but despite your posting it's been established that we are trying to implement our manifesto and using it as a working document. When we ask you questions about the council or post about the council's failings, you just dodge issues, distort issues or simply bring up something from the past to try and deflect the point. You've been rumbled!!! PS. I know I have a big nose, but no reason to get personal!!!

No need to get upset Richard just because someone's asking questions about New Labour. I wasn't aware Labour had any other representatives on this board, or perhaps even in Newbury. Who's the "we" you refer to when you say "When we ask you questions"? The simplest solution would seem to be not to ask me any question about the council if you don't like the answers.

QUOTE (Richard Garvie @ Jul 1 2011, 06:50 PM) You don't give answers, that is the problem I do, you just don't like them. As I say, don't ask any questions of me if you invariably don't like the answers. Who's the "we" you refer to when you say "When we ask you questions" by the way, you seem to be inferring there are more New Labour supporters here than yourself.
