Most of Newbury?

I think you give the NWN too much credit.

NWN used to claim 80% readership, which is much higher, of course, than copies sold.

But.... I'm not sure it has ever been suggested that none of the cameras were working at all. The query seems to be over how many, the pan/tilt/zoom capability, and the monitoring/recording.

Best to keep the crims on the back foot as opposed to tell them they won't be seen.....

As we have both said, you don't put a sign in the window when the alarm isn't working.

Yeah, but if you got robbed, you'd be right annoyed if the alarm company that you'd paid to install and run the alarm system, turned round and said "ah, yes, your alarm aint working, hasn't been for weeks, don't know when it will be, we've known about it for weeks, but didn't want to mention it in case it worried you"

Many insurance premiums attract discounts if cameras are present. Will be interesting to see what the insurers view of this is.

err, I think that is your own cameras, not those of the local council.

If you were annoyed, I doubt there would be a sign in the window, regardless.

It was your analogy.

And some premiums ARE affected by poximity to public CCTV.

Not giving any credit to the NWN? In the pub the other night and overheard a good discussion on the subject, council did not come out too highly thought of. I have had several people discuss the CCTV with me even out in the villages around Newbury. Word of mouth is still quite popular you know even without Emails etc.

Funny - not a single person I know has mentioned it, nor have I overheard it being discussed.

I haven't got the NWN yet, were there any of the replies to Stansfeld's letter published?

I see the owner of the cycle shop said: 'Mr Tomlinson said that the police were looking into whether West Berkshire Council’s CCTV cameras had captured the incident.' While I think the owner was stupid not to have shutters fitted, I have a feeling I know the answer.

Update: There were no replies. Perhaps the Newbury Weekly News are 'in on the scam'.

BTW Richard Garvie: have you been 'silenced' on this and other matters?

Perhaps if the NWN are being lent on, they could have the decency to state at the bottom of the respective letters that replies will not be printed if they contradict the contents.

Hi Iommi,

To be fair to the paper, I did send a reply in the form of an open letter to Graham Jones. Unfortunately, the NWN contacted me to say that they do not publish open letters on a legal standpoint, and I fully accept that decision. By the time I had replied late on Tuesday evening, I presume there was not space to publish it. I am suprised that nobody else submitted a letter though.

CCTV will become a topic of interest next week I'm sure. Can you imagine the implications if the CCTV network was still not operational next week? We are already 10 days past the delayed completion date, and is everything operation yet? I am now going to fire off an email to Graham Jones / Nick Carter and the officers running the project to see if I can get an official update of where they are at and whether they can confirm what I have been told by others.

I am amased that there is no investigation or accountability, it's now over a month since the old control room shut.

My sources tell me that NWN did get a number of replies. Richard, do you have an email address that people (general public) can contact you on that you are happy for people to use? If so, would you post here or PM it to me?

I'm not. I think the culture of fudging and avoidance is so deeply ingrained in the local establishment that they really and truely believe that no one has the right to know what they get up to and telling the truth is the same as not getting caught lying. Keep at it Richard.

Thing is, if this had been an out-sourced operation and this was the performance, I'd like to think that the council would have sought compensation. Bear in mind they said that the move wouldn't impact on the system whatsoever.

Thanks for the emails / calls tonight. I'm so frustrated now, there is something not quite right about this whole situation and I will be seeking answers in the morning. This whole thing is about to blow wide open again.

The thing is, I'd understand why they would not wish to disclose the impact of the move (in the event there is an interruption or down-grading of the service), but what that does is provide a situation where they cannot be scrutinised.

I heard that this has been done all in-house, if true, that might explain the reticence.

It might be a good idea to help get some shop keepers to petition the council for some answers. It sounds like we have been duped with this solution. Digital technology, but little in the way of a service like it was before. Even the Newbury Weekly News seem to have been muted.
