Newbury Today Forum _ Random Rants _ help please

Posted by: richy rich Jun 14 2010, 03:33 PM

I am looking for a local garage to service and MOT a Nissan figaro,an older car so a garage that knows cars more than computers would be good, I am new to Newbury so any help would be appreciated. It is a recommendation I am looking for rather than me picking randomly from a google search.

Thanks in anticipation

Richard

Long Lane Garage in Hermitage 01635 202005. Good value and not afraid of a bit of welding when needed!

£80 an hour labour and not very good with actual mechanics I would avoid this place like the plague. There's a garage further into Hermitage opposite The Fox that has a couple of good old school mechanics in situ.

The joys of trying to find a good mechanic, are there any good garages in Newbury itself ?

This list might help, but I honestly couldn't reccomend one - I haven't used many and haven't been happy with the ones that I have. Mays Autos were particularly bad.

For some years we have used the services of David Jones, tel: 07778176336. He has a workshop at Shefford Woodlands but also works mobile, so he could do the servicing and MOT at your premises. He is very competent and his rates are reasonable.

Chieveley Motors in Curridge.

Knightsbridge motors in Headley are pretty good.

Knightsbridge Garage and Car Sales - Newbury Road, Headley, Newbury, Berkshire, RG19 8LG - T: 01635 268 099

Ask for John and say you were recommended.

Hmmm, that doesn't tally at all with my experience of the Long Lane garage at all, nor that of other people I know that use them. They offer a good service, and always seem busy (which is a good sign in my opinion). The site was operated by another company a few years ago though...

Hmmm, I don't know about a garage, but you are so lucky to have a Figaro......I love them!!

Posted by: Torchy Jun 15 2010, 09:14 AM

Yes - cute car. I have noticed one around in Newbury recently...

Posted by: JeffG Jun 15 2010, 09:51 AM

Isn't that the car that Andrew Marr drives around?

Posted by: Iommi Jun 15 2010, 10:12 AM

Yes, I think so.

Yes, I've always like the look of the Figaro. Some very neat styling, and way ahead of the current "retro" trend.

Shame it's one of these under the skin though:

MoT at your premises. I don't think so.

If you want a small independent family run garage South / West of Newbury i found AT Motors, Studland Estate, Gore End, Ball Hill. to be first class. ( They are on the same estate as the Coal Yard ).

I always use nationwide auto centre, hambridge rd,they are very good and you can even book on line. Also if you go to www.autotrader.co.uk you can print out a voucher for half price M.O.T

That's the little one I was thinking of!

There's a Nissan garage on the motor park as well.

Yeah that sounds dodgy as Daley. How would he test the brakes for starters?

Posted by: Iommi Jun 15 2010, 09:58 PM

I suspect that what Brewmaster means is that he will come and inspect/service/repair it and then take it to get MoT'd.

Posted by: Strafin Jun 16 2010, 03:27 PM

There's a place called the halfway garage in Thatcham, no idea what they're like but they will come pick up my Audi A4, do a full service and MOT and deliver it back that day for £129.

Thanks for all the help, please give my wife a wave, she is in a blue one, I have seen a Lapis Gray and a
Topaz Mist around Newbury. My pet hate car on the road is the Micra so I really had to bite my lip when my wife wanted one, but it was a great birthday surprise.

Cheers Richard

I had the halfway garage do my car and have so far been astounded by the great level of service I have recieved. Friendly knoweledgable mechanics and super friendly reception staff. I am almost happy to be parting with my cash!
