Newbury Today Forum _ Random Rants _ Politician's moaning about social media abuse

Posted by: TallDarkAndHandsome Jul 12 2017, 09:31 PM

Don't use social media. Or be a bit more hard nosed. If you open a twitter account and start espousing what people should think you will always be the subject of abhorrent and sometimes racist abuse by a tiny but significant percentage of social media users that are trolls or unhinged or far left or far right etc...

Not nice but part of modern life. Deal with it. Or close your account and release press statements via another forum. Or just get another job!!!

Who have you upset now?

Posted by: SirWilliam Jul 13 2017, 07:52 AM

Now that's what I call a rant. Fortunately, or otherwise, I know very little about the workings of social media but I am well aware that it causes as much consternation as it does pleasure. Even the wretched police use Facebook !!!!!!!!!

One can only rejoice in the knowledge that it is of the time and will be as outdated as Sony walkman in 10 years time. cool.gif

Bit like the old adage ...
"Doctor it hurts when I do this."
Doctor: "Well don't do it then!"

Exactly, "oh I'm being bullied on Sharon's Facebook page". Then stop looking at Sharon's Facebook page! Not bleeding difficult to understand is it?

But the Sony Walkman is still in use, albeit an upgraded version!

Perhaps a rather more robust approach to this type of thing would be in order. The IT providers have no prescriptive right to refuse traces etc. so that offenders could be caught and dealt with.

I dont want my tax being spent on peoples feelings. Thanks. And I guarantee you any such activity would result in prosecutions of innocent people who don't agree with the politically correct view that all amd sundry are supposed to follow, like 🐑. Poor old Diane Abbott for example. People were nasty to her on twitter. Lock em all up. Where?

For that you need an ip address which is only available from web host if a NPO is obtained from the courts. At least that's my understanding, but as most social media companies are based stateside they can fall back on their good old first amendment.

Exactly. We could get all China mind and shut it all down. Then people would have something to moan about. 😮

When they are operating in UK jurisdiction the first amendment doesn't count.

It would appear that we have that eternal balancing act between freedom of speech and state censorship. Do we really want to return to a time when everything we put into print was subjected to approval? Of course not and that is what the half wits who abuse the modern media format fail to grasp. A lot of rhetoric is banded about the use of social media in the proliferation of Islamic fundamentalism and the call to close down those sites that encourage but that in itself will not stop terrorism. Indeed if anything it will make tracking of individuals harder.

As contributors on here have stated, if you don't like what you read stop reading it.

Admirable sentiments but now outdated. Like other past siboleths such as an Englishmans word is his bond and his home is his castle. As we've seen, all to often the perpetrators of vile rhetoric are too keen to turn it into physical reality. Freedom of speech was never really much of a reality anyway, so it's no big deal if managed properly.

You are of course correct in your evaluation. I,(we), was quite happy in my rose tinted world in the erroneous belief that we had reached the zenith of social existence but it is, as you say, a figment of our imagination.

I now look forward to the knock on the door from the boys in trench coats for even suggesting that I should be free to express my views. cool.gif

This is more than hurt feelngs; this is people breaking the law under the cloak of the Internet. Under law, one is not allowed to say what they want. Never have done. The Freedow of Expression is conditional.

Whatever we put into print is subject to the law of the land. Libel, incitement to violence etc can land you in court - if you can be identified. Hiding behind internet anonymity is a way of evading arrest or civil proceedings, a way to break the law without penalty. Don't curtail social media, just get rid of the anonymity.
