I don't find them contentious in the slightest. When you consider Newbury is years behind other towns and cities in having parking enforced by council employed wardens, the issue is why did it take so long.
I personally don't think Newbury is a big enough town and had enough parking issues to warrant these new parking enforcement officers, so I would say their employment is contentious. I would be really interested to know how much money they have made for the council in comparison to the salaries they are being paid.

because the police are far to busy dealing with much more serious matters (yes, including speed enforcement)
Never really seen any evidence of this, except for the odd speed camera coin fest along Monks Lane or Friday/Saturday outside liquid. When was the last time any Newbury resident saw a couple of Policeman walking down Northbrook Street on a Saturday afternoon? Do they ever walk the beat anymore?

There is a huge difference between being "on their best behaviour" and being perfect for every single second. Taking a few minutes to admire a sports car is hardly something worth berating someone in the street over.
Agree.......although it could be the lack of parking issues that gives them so much free time.

However, in that spirit I shall be spending my rest days at the smoking area of the council offices admonishing the workers for bunking off on my coin.
Blimey you would need a whole army to do that job, better start recruiting.
