QUOTE (motormad @ Jan 18 2013, 07:09 PM) Not necessary.
Besides there were trucks out with snow plows. You obviously have not been round any of the Estates etc off of the main routes. No gritting no snow ploughs just ignored as per usual!

Not 'ignored', WBC has long publicised the roads it will do and with what priority. The gritting/snow clearing mapPlay around with the layers and you can see any road in WBC area......

No, just to my Mums house which all the surrounding roads are not salted, let alone cleared. I managed fine in my car. QUOTE (Jayjay @ Jan 18 2013, 07:32 PM) The snow ploughs did not come near us. What pavements did they do in the region? I managed to walk 20 minutes to and from the town centre from my house and it was ****ing icey, and I'm fat and was eating ice cream, so I think most people can manage. People's expectation on the council to be there for them is unreal. Disabled and the elderly may suffer but in these cases then you'd hope they have a friend or relative they can call on for help in emergencys, eg needed more Werther's Originals. Ideally yes there should be more help to manage but at the end of the day I feel this country, the people are just not accustomed to it. In Canada they have worse than this every day and they manage.

The best advice I can offer is to leave as much snow as possible on your house path . With temperatures plummeting this evening the last thing you need is an expanse of sheet ice to step on in the morning. With lying snow at least one has a medium to provide grip . Unfortunately, as in most things, the biggest problem is not so much the weather conditions as the actions of the mentally challenged who seem to think that they have some divine right to venture forth whatever their needs . If one considers the miles of roads just in our area then no authority would manage to get round all of them. The answer is only travel when it is absolutely necessary , drive in a sensible fashion ( spinning wheels only pack ice further ),and try to walk on virgin snow . Meanwhile I am off to bed until spring .

That's a laugh as neither has been done today.

QUOTE (user23 @ Jan 18 2013, 08:18 PM) When i got home my neighbour had cleared a path on our shared drive. I've been out with my shovel (4 quid from b & q) and grit (also from b & q) and cleared what had fallen since. And if we all did a bit like that, nobody would have too many problems.

QUOTE (Strafin @ Jan 18 2013, 09:23 PM) And if we all did a bit like that, nobody would have too many problems. Exactly. I spent less than a tenner on stuff that'll last me the whole winter. Just get on with it.

Not a laugh, but if it hasn't been done without good reason maybe a call in the morning? Or an email...... All the vehicles are fitted with GPS loggers, so it is known what roads are done and when.

QUOTE (Sherlock @ Jan 19 2013, 10:24 AM) I was surprised how much snow/slush there was on the pavements in Bartholomew St this morning. You'd think it would be in the shopkeepers' interests to get together to clear the pavement between them, but is it true that if someone had an accident on a pavement which they'd cleared those who cleared the pavements could be liable for damages? That is an urban myth put about by technical college lawyers. It is NOT true. The only way such a prosecution could succeed would be for the claimant to demonstrate that whoever cleared the path did so with the intent of causing injury. Perpetuating this nonsense simply means that people fail to clear the pathways; yet another excuse for the bone idle. Frankly, with all the moans and groans we hear from traders in this area, with you, I'm very surprised they haven't cleared the paths. Hope they are not expecting any public support from the famous 'bid'.
