http://www.newburytoday.co.uk/news/news/21...-and-abuse.html

I was quite sickened reading what Richard Beynon had to say about the abuse received over the election period. Like him or loath him the reality is that we "supposedly" live in a democracy and the majority voice is final. I know the perpetrators are cowards at heart insomuch as they will not stand up and argue their case but it seems this is the way we are going in general.

Will be interesting to see if any on here can argue the case for

I wholly agree with the sentiments, so this isn't a defence, more an attempt at understanding why. Like it or not, modern politics are divisive and is based on raw capitalisim, or unconstrained market forces. That says trust no one but yourself, because no one else will, not even the Government. So then, if you are at the bottom of the heap, you have nothing to lose and your resort is violence, real or virtual. You aren't going to believe that any politician is driven by anything other than self interest.

No civil person could condone a lot of what Mr Benyon has reported. That said, there are many who find the promotion of the Tory party with placards very bit obscene as the words used to deface them. If I were a Tory I wouldn't advertise the fact. It is akin to telling the underprivileged to go far themselves.

Just put up a sign that says "IRA welcome here". That'll keep Labours thugs off the lawn. And if the 'under privileged' tried a bit harder. 😘

No, simply the people doing this are without hope and without anything else. In similar circumstances, what would you do? Scum Tories? Frankly, scum LibDems and worse scum New Labour who claim to be representatives of the less privileged but have failed miserably.

Where have I mentioned Jeremy Corbyn?

There are other parties, indeed UKIP were actually listening and gaining ground amongst this segment. As for the Southern Railway debacle, it's rather ironic that a tough Tory Government and a private firm can't deal with a Trades Union! Note, unions aren't tribunes of the people either.

I get mildly irritated by Tory landowners who put a placard every 100 yards along a few miles of their hedges.

How else are they supposed to impress on the passing peasants the size of their plot? Anyway, without the "privileged few" this forum would have closed down years ago. biggrin.gif

I doubt the privileged few are without merit, but a society will hold itself back if we disproportionately invest in people based on abstract reasons like parenthood. It certainly isn't a civil one, if we effectively punish people who are disadvantaged.

My view is someone boasting of supporting a partly that supported a ~40% cut in a council settlement is taking a risk of causing offence. If a defaced placard is the worst they experience, it will be nothing compared to the experience victims of the cuts face.

I get irritated by those labour land owners who put a placard every 100 yards along their boundaries as well. 🙌
