Have a look in 'Random Rants' - New proposed parking charges for Newbury thread. If you read that, you'll see that the answer to your question is no, we are more interested in the need or otherwise to own a mobile phone and on line TV reception.

Personally, I think the proposal is a good idea and its encouraging that WBC are looking at other ways to increase much needed revenues. For the potential low use areas, the proposal to use the existing mobile phone payment method is also quite a thrifty solution; won't need a big upfront investment in payment machines.

Revenue considerations aside, having a reasonable 'free period' is likely to benefit local traders and residents alike. This scheme will at least make street parking a distinct possibility again in the Newbury environs. I'd be surprised if any trader could field any sustainable objection to this. Similar schemes have been successful in several other localities I frequent on business.

The important question is 'Will this reduce the number of visitors to the town centre?'. If so, I'm all for it. I'm fed up with our cluttered town centre streets, shops and cafes and would much rather everyone shopped at the retail park and other locations with free parking, as God intended.

Well, without being too rude about the outlets in the retail park, I'm not sure that even the inducement of free parking would attract me to a bunch of pound a time shops full of xxxl mothers with economy pack kids! Not being decrepit enough yet to think a trip to Reading or Basingstoke is a nice day out, I'm more than happy with Newbury.

You think that the highstreet is heading in the opposite direction?

Its a far better and more pleasant environment. Perhaps there are a few who think that a pleasant wander round the shops, followed by a coffee can be achieved at the Retail Park, if so, good luck to them. Simple though they may be, Newbury town more than satisfies my needs, even for heavy electrical appliances at John Lewis and Iceland. I can certainly think of better things to do than sit and wait on the link road for the traffic to clear and then put up with trying to find a free 'free' parking space!

Shame, we got our last fridge/freezer there, which was needed in a hurry. At the time, only place that could secure and deliver one very quickly and didn't inflate the price for doing so. Its still going strong so have had no need to look again.

I think the retail park car park is one of the worst designs of anything ever.

Agreed. The stupid one way system and curbs in the middle of corners. Before they put the curbs in they had small asian men telling you which way to go. At the time I just ignored them.

No, I would have ignored them too.
I was simply stating what I saw.

And you understood exactly what I meant.

I disagree OTE.
I think they have dumbed down our language.
I see their influence on they way we speak more and more every day almost and I think it is a backward step.
Are you suggesting that we migrate to "American English" in our schools etc. and adopt it as our way or do we stay with what we have while we still have chance?
I know these days many seem to have difficulty adhering to correct English (there is someone earlier on this thread who is confused with "there" and "their") but is that an excuse to abandon it altogether?
Please tell me you don't have that "upward inflection" when you speak!! tongue.gif

Which is why the kerbs went in and the car park works better now than it did before.

Suggest you go read your Bryson.

Assuming you understand what someone means beacuse of the context isn't always a good idea.

A kerb curbs.
