Does anyone know what WH Smith is planning to open in the vacant unit next to the Parkway alley and Carphone Warehouse?

The planning permission on the window says WH Smiths PLC is the applicant. Wondered if it is going to be a card shop (Funky Pigeon)?

It's going to be a 'card market', selling cheap cards like Card Factory do.

Seems they're having trouble getting permission for the signage due to it being a listed building. Going through the planning docs they've had to alter the sign a few times and still can't agree on a design/ colour scheme.

The latest correspondence from the sign company say's they're opening imminently so they will put up a less imposing sign before putting in revised drawings and listed building application.

I can't see there being need to open a physical card shop.

Isn't that other big card shop just up the road?
And who doesn't buy their cards in Sainsburys nowadays, really lol.

The usual question I suppose, what sort of shop is wanted. Say a coffee shop, an estate agent, a phone outlet, a charity store; there is a lot to choose from. Trading is hard right now, didn't the new deli have to shut?

Do we need another card shop? The one in the centre is very good and cheap. What Newbury needs is different stores to what we've got. I go to Reading and Basingstoke a lot and there is so much variety.

It would be interesting to know what those places have that Newbury doesn't. I struggle to think of any.

A decent Model Shop would be handy, something like this one. http://www.swindonmodelcentre.co.uk/

I know several model shops have come and gone, but is seems people tend to use them as places to visit, rather than buy: see what you like, then go and find it cheaper on the Internet. Mind you, this happens for many shops these days.

Another way might be to try and become known for some specialist trade. Like Hay on Wye for secondhand books. Hungerford seems to have picked up on antiques. Could we capitalise on the canal, such things as boat chandlers, etc.

Of course, every man should have a hobby. It also keeps one from under the little ladies feet wink.gif.
