Yes, but, some people read an article in the Guardian and you can see the light bulb going off in their brain and the word (in large neon letters) appearing CRUSADE!!

How did a social conscience become so objectionable? Aren't you always bleating on about the responsibilities that go with rights? If it wasn't for social-minded individuals standing up and being awkward the world would be a terrible place.

Well informed individuals yes, certainly, Gaurdianistas bleating on about the latest 'social issue' with nothing to back it up? No thanks.

Then engage with the argument and bat it down, because if it has no substance it should be easy to refute, else otherwise it looks like your own position is the tenuous one.

What argument? Is it argument or ill informed opinion?

I'm definitely not a Guardian reader. I just want to live in a clean and safe environment... hardly a big ask is it?

This is what almost everyone does, regardless of which side of the argument they sit.

An inconvenient truth is a truth whether rich or poor. Necessity is the mother of invention.

Quite, although some cynics will say that is what most people want until it interferes with their personal budget or lifestyle.

Fine, get rid of your car, stop riding on the bus, turn your central heating off, stop having summer bbq's, no cruises, no flights to exotic places, get rid of any wood burners, no home deliveries. Oh and while your at it, no ciggies, no booze, no meat, all killers, every one.

And why is it a big ask?

Because luck would have it we were born in a place where we have learned 'greed is good'. Perhaps like with drink driving we might start to demonise gluttony.

Because to ""just want to live in a clean and safe environment" would entail giving up most, if not all, that Charlie lists. Not just us, but the whole of the developed world's population. A big ask??

depends how you categorise "luck".
Lucky that we have all these things but unlucky that it produces all the environmental problems that we do not appear to want.
Perhaps we should demonise gluttony?
Which individual, family, town, nation is going to make a start? rolleyes.gif

Er, I know, it was a rhetorical question.

Do you think we would benefit if were to start frowning on gluttony, and food waste come to think of it. Remember how parents and teachers would explain how people were starving in the world if we started complaining about our dinner.

Then there's the diesel from the trains in stations stood idle on tickover, while we wait for the one we want.

Power needed for air for brakes, power doors, air suspension and electricity for lighting etc.
Turbos can be shut down but extra power (and hence more diesel) required on start up to replenish air etc.
HST,s if shut down have a start up procedure that takes around 1and1/2 to 2 minutes!

I'm sure there is a good reason, but the fact remains there is a captured audience being 'force-fed' noxious fumes. If diesel is as dangerous as implied, then using trains will not allow you to escape it. Indeed, it might be worse for regular train users! Is or has the atmosphere been measured at a transport hub?
