For the first time in Newbury I saw a women in a full face veil (Burkha).

I for one feel both sad for this Country and sad for the individual who was wearing it.
She may wear it 'by choice' but in my opinion the Burkha holds no purpose in our society as it is devisive and encourages extremism from the far right.

If I go to a foreign Country I expect to behave and dress in a manner that that Country expects (or face the consequences). Why are we such a soft touch?

I can also only imagine the abuse that will get hurled at her from some of the white 'underclass' that pervades the Newbury area.

Yes, I also think that we should adopt the stance that France and Australia has.
I know we have had this debate before but I still believe it is wrong to allow this garment on our streets.

This is in Newbury though. I am just surprised by this. I also agree we should take the French stance.

Yes, it is very sad. This self imposed isolation is totally against all of the efforts made by so many people to welcome immigrants and intergrate them into our society.
It is wrong!

TD&H & Bloggo - go on - convince me you aren't the same person...

Never mind the ladies in Burqas, I'm terrified of nuns in dark glasses - have you seen the way they drive round Cold Ash?

Try wearing a Pompey shirt in Southampton town centre. Actually try wearing a Pompey shirt anywhere. Ban the Pompey shirt that's what I say because it offends other bigger and better football team fans.

Whilst we're at it ban old ladies from wearing those Tea Cosies on their head especially when they go into Tescos

Haven't we already had a "ban the burka" thread on here?

I wouldn't want legislation to ban it...yet, but I do think the burka is ugly and rude.

Like me after 10 pints.

It is not the Burkha we fear but the ignorance that surrounds it. And that is what this poor woman probably fears.

We must remember that in a free society , or democracy as we euphemistically call it , the clothes we choose to wear is of no concern to anyone .
The problem occurs if the wearing of items on religious or secular grounds is at the instigation of others , then it is intrinsically flawed .
Legislation against this sort of thing is a thin end of a precarious wedge . Education is the key , but I don't hold to much hope for the immediate future , lets hope that common sense prevails long term .

Further to my previous comments.

We are an impression driven society and what we chose to wear provides an insight in to who we are. Concealing ones entire head for reasons other than health and safety, renders one as looking odd and untrustworthy. At the end of the day it looks out of place and gives others the impression of one being eccentric.

If you are daft enough to want to do it , then please feel free . One has only to look at the number of people who wear shorts in the middle of winter to deduce that the " care in the community programme " is intrinsically flawed . rolleyes.gif
Personally I am reminded of the Robbie Burns ode.......

If only God the gift did gee us
To see ourselves as others see us.
