These morons who willfully caused this damage and disruption should be forced to either pay for the damage from their money, not ours or made to work for the bus company to work off the dept.
But as neither of these options will be possible they should be locked up.
When will this sort of mindless vandalism be dealt with in a meaningful and robust fashion.
Unless there are stronger sentences for this sort of crime it will never be eradicated.
They need to be taught that their behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
But I expect you are right and the courts will let them off with a derisory and ineffective sentence.

Well this one certainly used all the excuses. ( They never worked though ).

Stuart Matthews, defending, told magistrates that McGirr had been under immense stress at the time of the theft because his brother, mother and sister had all been suffering with various forms of cancer.

He said he had also been under pressure because he had lost his house renovation business because of the recession, and that his latest relationship had ended after McGirr stole the book as his partner’s children had been bullied at school.

“He feels like it is the most foolish thing he has ever done for a long period of time and he cannot explain why he did it,” said Mr Matthews.

The court was told that McGirr had previous criminal convictions, including a theft of some tools in May last year for which he was given a conditional discharge – breached by the theft of the Harry Potter novel.

McGirr, of Oxford Road, Kidlington, was jailed for six weeks and told he would serve another one week concurrently for breaching his conditional discharge.

I doubt anything serious will happen to them; if they are caught. Probably just a warning and a slap on the wrist.


I read something a couple of years ago that said kids find committing crime worth the risk because of the chances of going to jail/ or borstal very slim. Even getting a criminal record is very unlikely; at least at first. They usually get a slap on the wrist.

I think name and shame and advertising their picture is a good idea. In some areas they do that. Many years ago I saw that on a train station; for people who didn't pay and were caught. Their photos were put up on a board and in the local paper.

That's just it; it is not. We have to establish their guilt before we punish. That is how it used to work anyway.

If that was the case then they shouldn't have been named then. People won't hear the end result (guilty or innocent) so we will always know them as being guilty.

That is true, but that doesn't mean that naming 'names' can't do no damage at all.

But you and others were deciding how to punish them further before their guilt had been established.

I know and more often than not I suspect it is merited, but it does make it harder for those that might want to make amends. In the end, no-one wins.
