Rainfall totals for December & January.

Well last month (January 2014) in Speen (West Berkshire) we had the following total amount of measured rainfall,

170.7mm.

In December we had a little less, although over a third of Decembers rain fell in the period from 23rd - 31st December, but the total for December 2013 was,

152.3mm.

So what does this new calender month of February have in store, well sadly the first week looks just as bad as anything we have seen and suffered since before Christmas. Sadly that means that surface/ground water flooding remains a strong possiblity.

Have a nice day folks.

Garry

We've just been for a walk, there is a little park just on the junction of Stoney Lane and Waller Drive with a hollow, presumably an old dew pond. I've never seen any water in it 'till now; seems odd going up hill to a pond!

Worringly some of the forecast models for the next few days are showing that some places in South West & Southern England could see another 100mm of rain by Wednesday/Thursday of this week, with most of it forecast in another low pressure system due on Wednesday/Thursday.

So it is little wonder that the Met Office & the Environment Agency have already issued advance warnings for Wednesday.

Yes, but driving through the floods is not going to do your suspension, brakes and drive shafts any good at all. The excessive water on and under the tarmac causes erosion and potholes of course.

What damage does water do to those components?

It's not like we're driving through 6 ft streams of water, it's a few puddles on the road.
Potholes yes I suppose it is a vicious circle. Helps if it's not freezing and touch wood the weather will be better each day.

I find driving on wet roads increases fuel consumption.

Gazzadp, what's your longer term view? Are you willing to share when you think there might be a let up? Thanks for all you do already, it's appreciated.

More and more forecasters are now saying this kind of weather is in until the end of this month, me personally I think it will likely continue through until Spring (end of March beginning of April). As is in all honesty I cannot see how this Jet Stream set up will change until then.

The major problem is the Jet Stream, it sounds daft but when we get to the Spring equinox and the Sun is that bit higher in the sky, the warmer weather will push north over the states, shifting the Jet Stream with it.

Sadly though this Friday night/ Saturday is looking potentially very, very bad.

Well, at least we can prepare for the worse. Nice to know we have someone in the District who can give us an informed view.

Why the two identical numbers with different "area" codes? Is the 0345 version the non-rip off one?

The 0345 one is cheaper and can be used as part of your "call minutes bundle" from most mobiles.

Then why carry on advertising the 0845 number which caused a furore when it was discovered that the Environment Agency were ripping people off?

@ JeffG: I just copied and pasted the numbers from from the EA website.

TBH: I don't understand why the sudden problems that the press have got with the original floodline number, it has been a 0845 since the flooodline was set up.

Besides, if you use a landline to call it, then it is usually FREE if you have bundled landline account.

The 0345 number has only appeared in the last 2 or 3 days.

Me personally I don't give a toss what number people call, but in this day age there is now hardly any need for people to get flooded and then not know it might have been going to happen!

I use this to try and avoid rip-off non-geographical numbers.
Works at least 90% of the time.

I hate Non-geo numbers
However working in Telecoms I can tell you exactly why it's done - For easy diverting. Because say your local exchange goes down because a digger cuts through your lines, you're screwed. Where as with a non-geo it can be diverted much more easily.
