I had to go up to London today. Trains still running from Newbury, from Reading to Waterloo takes a time, but as I needed to be in Southwark first not much more than Paddington and the Tube. Came back via Paddington, managed to get a train and had a bit of a wait at Reading, but give them their due, they are doing a pretty good job.

Yes, Given that most of the FGW network is affected by the weather. I understand that P&O are considering bidding for the new franchise! tongue.gif

I had to go to London on Thursday and we went to Basingstoke and to Waterloo from there.

I unfortunately have to go in to London Tuesday-Friday next week.. I will be looking at taking the train from Thatcham. I think considering the weather it's to be expected, I'm sure they're going to run as best as they can.

Is there a webpage which is up to date with any delays, etc, that I can check on Tuesday morning before I leave?

Interestingly, Reading to Waterloo is exactly twice the distance in rail miles as Reading to Paddington (70 miles as opposed to 35). No wonder it takes longer! smile.gif

Going from Basingstoke is probably a better bet at the moment.

Think you are probably right. However as time didn't matter overmuch and I can walk to the station, the train seemed a good idea. Plus, I manage to use the time to clear my mail box!

As odd as it sounds I don't have the money to drive to and from Basingdeath every day and pay the £5 a day to park there.

Most trains also stop at 19 stations, journey time is around 1hr 20mins!
On the plus side the trains are electric units, much more modern than FGW, and most trains are now 10 carriages!!

So for me, going to a location almost adjacent to Waterloo, it's not too bad, as normally have to take a Tube from Paddington, just 20 mins extra and in a very warm coach! Basingstoke as had been mentioned also an option, but it means a third change. Not complaining Biker, it's far better than a car even now!

I think most of them are going down West, probably Bristol area, so they will have the pleasure!
But don't get too exited.
The proposed units we are getting are refurbished from Thameslink (scroll down to "plans"). Even older than the "Turbos" tongue.gif
No throbbing engines to keep you awake on your way to work though! rolleyes.gif

Bring back steam!! No motors and electrics below the water, no third rail to short out, and bring back semaphore signals with no electronics to be b*****d up. laugh.gif tongue.gif

Probably don't meet EU carbon emission quotas Ron! wink.gif
Admittedly manual signalling did not have the technical problems that we are now experiencing and, on a more serious note, the Ufton tragedy would not have happened had we still have been using that system.

Not older, 'heritage' surely laugh.gif I loved how they refurbished First Class, in effect just a bit of Crome! Really pleased about the engine noise, if you could arrange for a refreshment trolley too, you'd be getting near good tongue.gif

A reason for exiting Europe?

Shame the Tornado people can't do their magic with a Bullied Leader, wouldn't take too much more design to get that running properly today.
