Newbury Debating Society is having it's another meeting this week.
The topic is "This House Would Leave the European Union."
Should be a good one, I'll definitely be along - Wednesday 7.30 @ Newbury Football Club.
Anyone else on here interested in coming along?

QUOTE (Strafin @ Jun 12 2012, 07:05 PM) informative though? In as far as you'd be able to put a face to a forum name..............and then follow them home..............

QUOTE (JeffG @ Jun 13 2012, 10:32 AM) Might be amusing to go and listen to the UKIP nutters. If you disagree with the policies of UKIP, fine, but to label people (who simply may have a different view to you) as "nutters" is perhaps not the making of a mature debate?

Next debate is in two weeks. Hopefully it'll be becoming a regular fixture in Newbury.
If people would like to sign up to their mailing list drop an email to newbury@debating.org.uk
Hopefully I'll try and put faces to logins tonight...

Whilst it would be inappropriate to label all UKIP followers 'nutters', those that I have met do fall fairly and squarely into that category.

QUOTE (JeffG @ Jun 13 2012, 07:58 PM) I see I have partial agreement, but I withdraw my unparliamentary word . Let's just call them a misinformed fringe party. I think we all would fit under that descriptions to varying degrees.

QUOTE (Andy Capp @ Jun 13 2012, 08:15 PM) I think we all would fit under that descriptions to varying degrees. Maybe, but I'm proud to say it's many years since I've been able to grow a fringe! Anywho, welcome to NewburyToday theonlywayisnewbury, there aren't many lib dems brave enough to face their voters on this forum and I'm pleased you're here to mix it with us. As I said before, I'd kind of like to go but I think I'd find it quite challenging, though I've only just got in from work so couldn't have gone tonight.

Ad hominem can be quite effective in a debate. It's not netiquette, and it's hardly intellectual, but in the context of the OP the object of the exercise is just to win the debate and if it's done well ad hominem is quite a useful technique.
