So what are we supposed to do when we are dealt an AMBER WEATHER WARNING!!!?
It smacks of another quango type, nanny state cosseting where we cannot think for ourselves as parodied by Tom Utley here.
By all means give the warning, bearing in mind that we can do nothing about whatever Nature deals out for us, and take the necessary precautions if possible.
"Yes, you can all think for yourselves" tongue.gif
By the way, did anything happen? I slept through last night! rolleyes.gif

You have answered your own question - take the necessary precautions.

Which are / were in this case?
Take precautions if you wish / can but the way the OP posted it would seem like Armageddon was about to fall upon us. ohmy.gif
What can I actually do to protect against lightening / flood damage? Did many put out the sandbags (which seem to be generally useless at keeping water out!) over the last few night to defend against the onslaught predicted?
Nature will do it's worst and there is nothing I can do to stop it.
The main precautions seem to centre around changing one's travel plans.
How many people actually do that after an amber warning such as this one?
Surprisingly I can actually adapt my driving according to the weather condition without a warning from a government quango! Can some not? tongue.gif

It allows you to advise other's that you might be late for something. Its just information for heavens sake. Why bother with a train timetable, you might get held up in traffic! rolleyes.gif

When it comes on here free from someone such as the op then fair enough. (although the way he phrased and capitalised it it looked like we were expecting the end of the world!)
Unfortunately some of this useless advice comes from government quangos paid for by us, many of which Cameron promised he would dispense with.

If it's just information for heavens sake let me re-phrase the op........

"The Met Office have issued an amber severe weather warning for tonight".

I didn't know that weather waned and probably waxed.
