So Alan Law says the Conservertive administration should be congratulated for being able to "freeze" council tax for the coming year. Isn't it true that this has nothing to do with the local council, who have actually raised council tax by 2.5%??? It's only a grant from the Government that is freezing council tax for a year, but who will pay the extra 2.5% per tax payer next year?

That means that we face a council tax rise of at least 2.5% next year, so realistically it could be 3, 4 or even 5%??? Hardly the picture perfect image you present via the NWN then Cllr law!!!

I have been in and around Newbury for about a decade, including stints working at the former radio station as recently as 2005. I'm a Labour member nationally, and I've joined the party locally because I agree with their strategy. I try to post here to engage with people, but recently it has become a case of batting away attacks from the same few people. You tell me to post what I would do personally, so I told you. I just can't win.

Dannyboy, FGW is not tax payer owned, it's a commercial entity run to make a profit. Go to the car park before 3:30pm on a weekday and tell me how many spaces you find.

Just to touch on the political affiliation once again, I've never been affilated to a party before last summer. I felt sick after the coalition was formed, and as the months have gone on things get progressively worse to a point where my business is potentially going to be hit to an extent where I may have to pack it in and do something else. Everything I have learned to value in society is being smashed up by the Government, and there is no way on earth I could ever support another political party after this. Locally, the council has never been that good for as long as I have been around, and enough is enough. I've seen the Labour manifesto, I've seen the budget (I actually wrote both of them) and both the regional party, national party and local members have all taken part in the consultations and crafted this document to reflect not only core Labour values, but the views of West Berkshire in general. What I have learned in my short time in politics is that our local party should try to represent the local community, regardless of traditional affiliations. We also need to put forward a candidate for MP who will represent the people of the area, all parties should do that.

So you are in it for yourself. Thanks for the honesty.

Why?

I'd expect no less of myself or anyone else. It is human nature. Get over it.

It was one of many reasons. I'm glad you approve of the axing of children centres in the UK, trebling tuition fees, scrapping the EMA, raising VAT, reducing defence funding when you said you would protect it etc.

You want all that - simple - raise taxes. If there ain't the cash to pay for it you can't have it.

btw - I never said I'd protect anything.
