Hello all,

I'm a student returning to Newbury for summer and am finding genius ways to fund myself before going back to uni in September. I've come up with a great service that I think most people want but aren't too sure on where/how to get it.

Basically, I convert your old home videos to DVD. It seems most families have boxes of home videos from the 80s and 90s but with the decline of VHS they're just gathering dust and don't get watched. By transferring this footage to DVD I can significantly improve the picture/colour quality but more importantly ensure it's on a format that won't become dated. I package them very neatly with whatever typewritten information you like, as well as putting menus in the DVDs to make navigation easier. Obviously if you prefer I can put it on memory stick/video CD or whatever other formats exist.

One of the reasons I'm offering this service is that I had such a frustrating experience finding it myself. It seems no companies offer it at a decent price, and to do it yourself you have to buy and set-up all sorts of hardware/software that don't like working with each other. Being a bit of an editing enthusiast, it was worthwhile for me so I may as well take advantage of the position. Whether it's one, two or fifty hours of old memories you have lying around, it's well worth getting them updated to a digital format. One advantage that springs to mind is once you have digital copies, you can duplicate them to friends/relatives with relative ease.

If you're interested please email me at homevideovault@gmail.com. I am based in Newbury so will have no problem collecting materials from you. Just say roughly how many tapes you have in mind and we'll go from there. Spread the word too :-)

All the best

Sorry it took me so long to reply but i had to wade through the sudden influx of advertisments on this forum rolleyes.gif

I recently put a 'free' advert in the Newbury Weekly News for a television I no longer need.

If I deliver the the tv to the buyer do i need to get liability insurance? What happens if I fall asleep at the wheel and veer of the road with their new product? What happens if I get hit by a pink elephant. Do I need pink elephant insurance?

Should I declare it to the HMRC as well?

Should I offer them a guarantee on the tv?

Should I get really stupid about rules and get overstressed if a student wants to decrease his £20K debt?

If you don't like this post because it's an advert then stop reading it, simples!

This guy is offering an ad-hoc service, not a business. I'm sure if we all started offering him loads of work he could leave uni, start a business, and declare all the tax and liability under the sun. Richard Branson started by selling records on the street corner so why don't we all lambast him as well. Maybe the HMRC could arrest him for undeclared tax?

Seriously, people need to chill out.

Don't be daft, selling a 2nd hand telly and delivering it is obviously not a business. Advertising (wherever it may be) and providing a service to make money is a business.

This person is trying to take business away from businesses that do pay their tax, rates and NI, that is the problem. Totally different from washing the neighbours car in the school holidays when your 14!

How would you feel if you had a vhs to dvd business, employed staff, paid rent, rates, tax etc, paid to advertise, and then someone comes along trying to avoid all these costs. Of course he could undercut you and at the very least loose you vital income or even put you out of business. That would result in unemployment, loss of revenue for our HMRC, a landlord without income from the office/shop etc etc.

As I said before, do it by all means, but do it properly. Do you know if Mr Branson avoided the tax man whilst selling records on the street corner? I have googled it an can't find confirmation, I presume you can tell us where you got this info though rolleyes.gif
