I do hope so I love Wilkinson but weren't there rumours about all this about 8 months ago and nothing came of it. Surely does not take 8 months to sort out a lease?

If i remember rightly they were having problems with the back access & costain.

They defiantly coming, as they've put in plans for signage.

You can see them here: http://planning.westberks.gov.uk/rpp/index...ef=10/00881/ADV you need adobe PDF reader

it is about time something happened to that old Wooloworths store. It was an eyesore as it now stands.

Whatever it will or won't be it will be better than an empty and tatty store.

It's only tatty because the landlord has let it get like that.

Great news, about time we had some action on this site.

Incidently, I saw the Labour Party were looking for votes outside there today; seemed highly symbolic to me that they should be doing so outside a shabby, empty, abandoned place!

Goodbye Gordon!

Good one. Although I was expecting to see some sea. You know, that bit between the land and the sky.

Just because the place is empty, doesn't mean it should be allowed to look a mess. Instead of posters for a circus that has long since left town and whitewash (how very 70's) on the glass, how about community posters. Minimal cost to the landlord.

Bit of necromancy...

Walked past the old Woolworth building yesterday and they front screens were open. Looks like they have totally gutted the interior, down to bare walls and the pillars. I could see plant machinery moving about too, but as it's only lit by spots, I couldn't see what was being done.

Wilkinsons have advertised and recruited for staff for the store opening in October. Over 600 applicants turned up for a handful of jobs.

9AM on a Wednesday morning? Hmmm...

I, like many other, will be at work so I'll let the retired and unemployed get any opening offers.

Had a wander round on one of my rare visits to the town centre this morning. The range of stuff they have in there quite blew my mind. It feels like Boots, Homebase, W H Smith and Robert Dyas all rolled together in one store. Plus Pick 'n' Mix!

Yes, I should have said another two stores are opening in newbury. I also read that Newbury as a town is doing better in some areas, compared to some other towns. Also I believe that unemployment is low in this area as well.

The amount of shopping I do in any of the former is not going to make a dent in Newbury's economy whatever I decide to do.

It was just the impression I had - too much of everything and no particular focus. I was just confused. From what I had heard about the company, I was expecting a hardware store.

This is what all the shoppers thought when they switched from going to the baker, greengroces, butcher etc etc in favour of the new fangled supermarket that had just opened......

Wilko sell anything where there is traditionally a large amount of profit due to buyer perceived value - such as razor blades - at more 'realistic' prices. They look for any product where they can do this. Hence the strange product lines.

My thoughts.

I'm with JeffG. Felt far too much like Woolworths by trying to be all things to everyone.

Had to pop in to Robert Dyas and overheard someone ask the staff if it has had an impact. The reply was "It's killing us".

We'll see what happens when the novelty wears off in a couple of weeks.
