My partner's parents came today; dad decided to wander round town and ventured into our new museum. He saw a map which took his fancy in the shop but came away empty handed. 'Sorry we don't take cards, only cash'.

Oh well, that's one well disgruntled visitor they won't get again.

I haven't been in Newbury too long and initially thought the constant criticism of the local councils was just reactionary carping. Sad to say experience since then now suggests otherwise. This is yet another good idea damaged by poor delivery. Who else would dream of opening a shop these days without a cashless facility? Ironically, not even the Council who are proposing 'cashless' payment for off street parking fees.

Stick around and you will see that all the criticism is justly deserved in the majority of cases! rolleyes.gif

Not quite sure what to say! You couldn't make this up; but remember, our Council does not do customer service.

The really sad thing is that even if we wanted, nothing will change. No matter who we vote for, this pantomime just continues.

All you can do is to explain to your pa in law that it's free entertainment!

Good one!

When asked have they got a response why a council shop does not take cash payments they replied "We are unable to comment because of a confidentiality agreement" rolleyes.gif

I haven't been in yet, but that does seem pretty stupid.

As for reactionary carping, yes, you'll get a bit of that, but the town council are a failed organisation that passed the tipping-point some time in 2007 and have been in an irreversible decline since then, so most of the criticism of their vindictive inept regime is well grounded. WBC is more of a curate's egg.

To be fair, this is really just a case of "old habits die hard". You only have to look at what's gone on here through the years and what's going now to see that the Council have only ever operated on the 'Cash only' principle. (Quite often in brown paper envelopes).
