Our host newspaper reports that residents in the Shaw estate area are complaining about the number of cars parked outside their houses during the day. Apparently the car parkers are thought to be Vodafone employees, on the basis that they are wearing suits; which some must take to mean they can't be residents!! Presumably, these are the 'massive number' of people who have added their names to the LibDem petition in an attempt to stop unrestricted parking in the Town Centre?

Having of necessity spent some time travelling on business and as a consequence suffering from some of the more inane local planning rules on parking I have every sympathy for the car parkers. What on earth is wrong with someone legally parking on a public highway outside a dwelling house? Before you ask, yes, people do park directly outside my home.

My Nan rents the bit of ground at the side of her house in Putney for parking to a lady who works in the town. The lady even looks after Nan's cat when she goes on holiday. Everyone wins.

Some people seem to think that when they bought their house, they also bought the road and footpath outside. They'd feel slightly different about it if they were made to pay directly for the upkeep of that individual length. It's a different form of nimbyism where nobody is allowed to park in 'their' road.

Understandably they may get upset if someone turns up in a dirty great Range Rover and parks up on the grass verge every day throughout the long wet winter months, as those things can weigh nearly 3t and can turn a grass verge into the Somme within one wheel turn. But mostly it's just commuters turning up, parking alongside the kerb and going off to work.

No doubt some of those that live in Shaw who are complaining also commute themselves and they do the same thing to different residents in the streets near where they work. The complaints however are always to do with the supposed FRAUD.... as EVERYONE in Vodafone gets huge handouts for walking or catching a bus to work.. rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif

Some of these curtain twitchers in Dene Way need to get out more.....

That is an assumption and pretty nasty one at that, assuming wrong doing by everyone who happens to be parking in your street -I'm glad I don't live amongst them. The remuneration packages employees get from any private firm are confidential anyway. On this basis, from the state of the surface, everyone walking down Northbrook Street is a gum chewing, anti social littering smoker!

I'm just surprised that WBC haven't decided to introduce parking charges on the affected streets.

I omitted the rolling eyes thingy from my paragraph.... rolleyes.gif

(but I'll add them now to make it clear wink.gif )

However going from that NWN report it was full of allegations of fraud and assumptions 'they're all at it...'

EVERYONE in Vodafone gets huge handouts for walking or catching a bus to work..

Factually incorrect.

As I understand it many Vodafone employees are offered a 'green incentive' not to use a car park space, but not all. How they get to work is their choice but they can walk, cycle, get a lift, use a taxi or one of the many free commuter bus services, or even ride a motorbike to the Shaw site.

Employees who do drive to work and utilise a car park space do not qualify for the green incentive. They may be forced to drive because they can't use any of the alternatives detailed above, or they might have childcare needs, for example.

There are also non-Vodafone employees who drive to the site, for whom the incentive is not applicable.

I can understand local residents frustration. Not that they think their roads belong to them, but that there are a large number of cars parking there during the day, which inconvenience them in one way or another, and more than likely belong to Voda employees, who might well be claiming the green money, fraudulantly.

One solution would be for permits to be given to local residents, but is it worth it? I can't see Vodafone wanting to pay for that, and I don't see why the Council should either. It's a bit of a lose/lose situation in my eyes.

Now that would really be a community gain! Can you hear the LibDims squeaking away like demented guinea pigs if anyone even dared promote it. Seriously, a great idea.

See my last post. wink.gif

It's a comment that's often made though by many residential curtain twitchers in Newbury. If they see anyone parking in 'their road' and walking off to work then "they must be Vodafone employees claiming a bounty for catching the bus. It's disgusting that they get away with fraud"....etc etc

I know of residents in Herewood Close who used to report parked cars through to Vodafone! Herewood Close is miles from Vodafone! It was more likely that they were people working into the town centre for their work, but these residents were convinced it must be VF employees. Paranoid they were....

And why should VF employees be prevented from parking on the PUBLIC highway in any case. By paying our car tax we're helping to pay for it's upkeep, whether it's a stretch of motorway or the little bit outside the curtain twitchers house in Dene Way....

Sorry, but I can't understand the residents. This is what happens if you live in a successful urban area. Do the residents all walk or bus to their own places of employment, never park by the side of the road when shopping in town, always use public car parks when they go visiting?

If they really do want to avoid kerbside parking, simple answer is to move. Some housing going up in Compton shortly.

No, this is selfish nimbisim. Vodafone have just got caught in the cross fire and why on earth should they pay? Black dog has provided the answer; let's see if the moaners go with that.

Because as part of their terms of employment (green scheme at least) they're not allowed to park within a certain distance of the HQ site. 2 miles or 30 minutes walk, if I remember correctly.

Can you confirm that as an HR professional for Vodafone? We don't even know if the errant Parker's are Vodafone employees!

So because I pay £250 a year for car tax, I'm allowed to park wherever I like but the matey in his eco-snot-box who pays £30 can only get the crappy, out of town spaces?
