Talking to a council official neighbour he was telling me that more and more household items have been dumped. Where I live parts of beds have been dumped in the local river along with other items. Where the flats are next door to me people dump their rubbish at the back and side and because nobody knows who dumped them Sovereign have to pay to get it removed. I often go on estate inspections with Sovereign, PCSO’s and such and we often find items dumped in the middle of the street, alleyways and in kids play areas for somebody to collect.

Was it such a good idea charging residents £25 to take their rubbish when it is costing the council a lot more to collect the disbanded items? Or does the £25 compensate for the dumped rubbish?

The Council did not really think this through I believe.
A lot of people will not pay £25 to have a single item taken away and that is a fact of life.
This will, and has increased the incidence of fly-tipping.

Yet another example of blinkered logic from the hallowed chambers of WBC , though one has to pose the question why does anyone have a viable excuse to dump their unwanted rubbish when there is an excellent re-cycling centre along the Newtown road .

Even allowing for non drivers it still takes effort to " transport " the items to the dumping ground so has it more to do with the actions of the mindless minority ,again ,rather than the fiscal restraint of the council .

There certainly seems to be more larger items thrown into woods or just dumped on local open ground in the area.As stated above it would be easier to take them to the proper place.In these days when money does seem to be in short supply I cannot see people paying £25 per item , or whatever , to get the council to collect stuff though.

The funny thing is that they tried this once before; charging money to have your rubbish taken away. And the same thing happened as it is now happening. So they scrapped it.

WBC about midway up the range in charging for removal of such rubbish and very few councils now do it for free, I'm afraid. Have a look at other councils websites e.g. 30 sovs in Pompey but with concessions for the elderly etc.

I am a member of our local NAG committee, local association and also work with Sovereign housing association. We often do estate walkabout and reportes are made. Does that answer your question?

Have to work in Portsmouth 1 week every month. GMR is right, fly tipping is up, as per the local free sheet and Radio Solent. Mind you they could be making it up as well!
