I hate it when people stop twenty feet before the traffic light, wait for a queue to form then pull forward. I also hate it when people slow down 100m away and cruise up to it.

That sounds like a petrol saving technique.

I don't get it. Why would they do that?

Predictive driving.

"Reading the road ahead effectively can save huge amounts of petrol.

As we all know, there are often queues of traffic at traffic lights, junctions, roundabouts etc. Looking well ahead whilst driving and anticipating a stop is beneficial. Ease off the accelerator well before you reach the traffic queue and apply the brakes gently as you get closer. Driving in such a way, by keeping your foot off the accelerator and using the cars momentum uses no petrol. If you compare this to keeping the accelerator on and braking harshly when you reach the queue, you can easily save over 5% of petrol.

Driving using this technique also reduces brake and disc wear significantly. Depending on your vehicle, a new set of brakes and discs can cost easily in excess of £300."

But that doesn't work if you are braking anyway way before you need to. I am not talking about arriving at the back of a queue at a sensible speed, i am talking about seeing the light turn red, and slowing right down way before its necessary. Then using the accelerator to get to the queue before stopping for a second time.

Yep, I thought that was considered a good thing to do in anticipation of the light possibly changing to green. Beats having some bum hole speed up behind you when you're stationary, and wonder whether his bumper is going to be joiing you on your back seat.

Things which wind me up, (more prominent in my mind with the A339 road works);

Using the wrong lane of the roundabout (if the left lane states left only, then don't go straight over!!!)

People blocking the roundabout or sitting in "keep clear" or box areas.

Inconsistent speed of driving, 35mph one minute, 55mph the next.

I knew when I saw this thread that it would be very popular. (Me included) as of course we on here, as we have seen on other related threads, are all perfect drivers with high skill levels, we never make a driving mistake or error of judgement. So we are very free to air the superior skills which we possess for the benefit of the 'other driver'.

Have you ever met anybody who would say that he is not a very good driver. As rare as hen's teeth I suspect.

Anyway, I find that it's always somebody elses fault when anything untoward happens.

Talking about driving, the bloke driving the car transporter and recovery vehicle that went t*ts up on the A34 has been charged with dangerous driving. A cat being chucked out into the woods got a photo and a front page story in todays NWN. The accident which paralysed Newbury in the morning and must have been really spectacular, Range Rovers spread all over the road across both carriageways got a couple of paragraphs on page 2 and no pictures. Really disappointing, I was looking forward to a spread especially as nobody appears to have been hurt.

I'm not very good.

I leave travelling journey time too short, hence I tend to be in a rush. I get agitated when I am overtaken. My parallel parking is poor. I sometimes forget to indicate or cancel my headlights. I sometimes get in the wrong lane approaching junctions I'm not familiar with. I usually travel faster than the speed limit, unless in town, or in a 60. I leave breaking a bit late sometimes, and my pulling away at junctions isn't always smooth. I have even pulled up to a stop when a traffic light has been green (out of habit because it is nearly always red).

I was going to say that there are two things which a man will never admit to being bad at - driving and sex.

Can't remember... I think people's sexual prowess is usually proportional to the fulfilment of the favour they are about to ask of you.
