I think we should have a local tax on bars in Newbury that is set out to directly pay for the clean-up and the policing of evening and late night drinking in town. It is also about time bars were named and shamed, and fined, for serving people who appear too drunk. Perhaps then we could enjoy a late night drink if we wish one.

Completely with you, Andy. I dont drink myself (don't need substances to improve my quality of life) but I'm accommodating of people who do, to a point. I'm actually 20, so probably one of the youngest posters here, and have to admit even I am sick of this culture where it seems "cool" to be so drunk you fall over, vomit, pass out, or whatever. It's not, it's stupid in every sense. Go out for a celebration by all means and have a few but it seems many people don't know their limits.

I'm not sure a tax would work. The core problem is retailers selling alcohol at stupidly cheap prices, let's address this issue we hich leads to people getting tanked up before they leave the house. I used to defend Liquid as they were a premium priced establishment, but if they or any other bar is heavily discounting, they should be penalised if problems can be traced back to them. This would certainly prevent them admitting those already drunk.

The Waggon is not a discounter, therefore I don't see a problem with the extension.

It is unfair to penalise the pubs as in many cases those that are causing problems have 'pre-loaded' at home on cheap supermarket bought alcohol. There are a number of underlying causes of binge drinking and anti social behaviour, so to pick out just one element for taxation would not be a sensible solution - first of all address the supply of cheap alcohol through restrictions on premises licences and minimum price per unit.

The idea is to avoid the general public tax payer picking up the bill. Second: if pre-loading is a problem, then the bars should be refusing to serve these people - if they are tanked-up.

Who is it that can afford to go out drinking into the early hours of the morning, in terms of both finance and the ability to be up and about for work or whatever the next day?

Most evenings the town is really quiet anyway, I was in The Snooty Fox last friday between 9.30 and 10.30 and me and my 5 mates were the only people in there, it felt very strange. Before that we were in The Lion for the England match and that was nowhere near as busy at it used to be for such occassions either.

The staff looked understandably bored too...........

Oh for the good old days of licensing laws, when you didn't get woken up at 3.30 in the morning by rowdy people going past your house.

Pubs are struggling because for well-documented reasons.

Here's one that's investing a six figure sum to sensitively refurbish a listed building, serve reasonably priced drinks, and provide a safe fun environment....and here we are with another miserable thread calling for penalties.

The Waggon's a circuit pub mostly, and the landlord is frequently chucking drunk people out when they arrive pre-loaded.

The article neatly demonstrates what is really wrong with our local institutions.....Newbury Town Council is desperately out of touch with the people they purport to represent. The only saving grace is that WBC never listens to their "ill-informed" opinion. laugh.gif Good job, or there would be no Wetherspoons, no Document House and no Montys.

We're quite lucky here that you can have a safe night out in Newbury no matter what time of night it is. NTC should go on the lash in Reading and then their comments may be worth more than a hill of beans.

Agree with that as well. My flatmate does this often and I just punch him in the face as punishment. Loads of other people do it as well.

It is not a penalty, it is a way for licensees to continue serving late into the night. The thread was inspired by a licence extension being turned down.

Err... the lack of factual knowledge so far in this thread is amazing. Has anyone got any figures for police spending since the snooty fox has been 24 hour which we can compare with a similiar period when it closed at 'normal' times. No. Then what the **** are all these reactions based on?

Also don't forget that a vast number of people are on shift work or temporary work in the local area, why are they penalized by not being able to buy a pint when they finish the night shift at 5am? Are you better than them because you got a 9pm-5pm job? No, just in case you were fumbling for an answer...

And xray1337, i think growing up would improve the quality of your posts...

I beleive the council (who are poorly informed, out of touch and certainly allot more irresponsible with their spending than many of these landlords) need to get with the programme and understand that unless they actvely encourage the pub trade in this town we will soon be left with few options. i.e. One wetherspoon or the other. They have already successfully driven virtually all the independant stores out of the town centre, NTC winners all the way, lucky none of them live in town else they might begin to regret their decisions.....

I don't think swearing on a forum which is both publically accessible and used by people of all ages is appropriate.
p.s What exactly is wrong with my posts? Other than the fact you disagree with my sentiments or how I word them, or the jokey comments I put as to not come across as someone who's behaving as if they're having a rectal exam.

This is a private forum, for public use. You need to abide by the rules or except the consequences.

I don't think the average tax payer should be lumbered with the bill now, nor in the old days. Either the local bars need to manage their customers better or close down.

No, I just think the local pubs should pay for the mop-up after an evening session. Have you seen the state of the town first thing on a Sunday morning?

And this shouldn't just apply to bars either, there's the kebab places and all their customer's litter as well.

Swearing on a public forum is hardly the stuff of maturity either.
