As we know so little about what happened, how can we judge?

Anyone thought that 2 weeks after a Norwegian human goes on the rampage a Norwegian bear does too?
I think the Norwegians have something going on.......

We don't need to know anymore though - think about it, you decide to go camping in the middle of a place where Polars Bears live - Bears that are fierce, protective and hungry - they can smell food (inc human flesh) up to 32km away will find you and they will eat you. They don't know not too. If they fitted their Trip Wire incorrectly and the PB got through than that is their fault. They are suppose to have people watching (which they didn't), looking out for bears and as dannyboy said the PB would most probably have been killed anyway if it was seen near them. This is just all wrong.

PB are endangered species due to Global Warming - they could be extinct in up to 80 years. Were certianly not helping by 'sleeping' in the middle of their home are we.

Instead of taking groups of students to do this exploratory trip - maybe sunbathing in the med is more appropriate.

Perhaps the standard procedure should be don't camp where there a wild polar bears.

Agreed - just read the polar bear was about 8 stone underweight so would have been extremely hungry - something which us human beings are ultimately responsible for.

Perhaps we should go 'armed' with seals, not guns?

Perhaps we could cut the jokes, and NOT go at all - then no animal (living his life, not harming anyone unless disturbed) wouldn't get killed.

I was being flippant, but with a serious message underneath; if you follow what I mean! There's a certain twist to this because what has been suggested is that this bear was doomed anyway. I'm not sure. A polar Bear weighs between 55 and 100 stone, so at 8 stone underweight, it might have had a way to go before it was in dire straights.

If you go and camp slap bang in the middle of a dangerouse animals territory it's just asking for trouble. It's not like they were looking for a cure for cancer up there. So why go for gods sake.

People will always want to go to wild places.

Then don't be surprised if the consequences are not favourable!

And to tame them - camping on Svalbard dangerous? Let's build a hotel then.

What the betting that next years 'expedition' will sleep in cabins?

I heard that the bear was fine for a bit and then kicked right off without warning. I wondered if it could have been a bi-polar bear.....
