Congratulations to those pupils who have performed well in your recent exams.

One question though. If you pass everyone does it not indicate that the exams are now perhaps too easy and need 'beefing up'. I wonder what the pass rate would be if the same pupils were given the A level examination papers from the 1970s?

No, the exams must be really difficult as many of the pupils will be a taking a gap year to recover - poor soles..

Can I have a gap please, I've been working for 30 years and only had the odd weeks holiday in any one year, so I must be due a whole year off by now tongue.gif

But are examinations a horse race or a marathon? Serious question. Having seen some of the work / effort by students over last 10 years, in my view, the 1970's papers would be a doddle. Today, education is much broader - it's just a crying shame that the UK economy isn't geared up to exploit it.

Gap years serve a number of purposes. Some companies look to see what employment candidates did in their gap year. Not all stay in bed or go on a wild drug fuelled binge. wink.gif

By the same token some companies may also rather employ someone who doesn't need a years break every 24 months, and that's with 13 weeks holiday a year as well - hard life being a student biggrin.gif

The days of drifing out of university and into a 'good safe' career have gone. The head offices of the biggest and most likely recruiters are now abroad. Whilst new Labour were delivering high end education it lost its way with UK industrry. UK is a subserviant economy.

I don't think you understood what I said. A gap year, means a gap in education. Some use the time for recreation, others to travel and some to work.

Take a year off. No-one is stopping you.

I have done it many times. Saved up & left employment to go on extended holidays.

Think it was Charles Handy who first noticed life long careers were no longer sustainable or even possible. Travel broadens the mind - so this approach is very sensible and makes for a much more flexible and multi skilled workforce.

The local schools have also done a good job this year. Some results exceptional and none less than respectable. Considering they also have to do a good two years independently assessed course work as well - I think our Students well deserve congratulation. I know I'd have trouble trying to meet today's standards.
