There is something very wrong with this.
The NHS, funded by Government and you and I, spending £7m on a TV advertising campaign to educate us on the dangers of drinking alcohol and yet the Government is sanctioning the opportunity for people to start buying alcohol from 7 o'clock in the morning.
What a waste of money.

The campaign is for sensible drinking, not 'no drinking'. Anyone who wants a drink at 7am will get one anyway, or likely will have one.

Yes, I understand. It just seems so contradictary to me that a Local Authority would allow a license to be open for alcohol consumption at 7am.

Come on Bloggo. Don't you fancy a nice pint of Strongbow with a full English at 7am? In all seriousness I would expect that they have applied for the license for when sporting functions (like the World Cup) are held in far flung places with matches kicking off at stupid o'clock in the morning. That way it will save them the bother of keeping on going back to the Magistrates to get a temporary license.

OK, I do understand all of that but I still find it bizzare that the NHS are spending all that money and going to all that effort to convince us that having that second glass of wine is bad for us and yet alcohol is being made available 24hours a day.

It has always been my ambition to breakfast on a steak with a pint of beer, but the beer would have to be a good hoppy pale ale or a rich porter.

Wetherspoons standard opening time nationally seems to be 09:00 excepting places like Brum Airport etc. so hardly think they will change their policy just for Newbury

Their breakfasts are very competively priced as is the tea and coffee. Never felt the need for a beer that early, I must admit, but it used to be said that the buffet cars (when such things existed) on morning services from Eastbourne up to town did a good trade in selling shorts to first class commuters..

It might be 7 in the morning for you, but for some it's the equivalent of 7 in the evening and after a busy shift, a beer before home and bed would be welcome.

Spent a large chunk of my life working shifts, including nights, and the thought of a beer at that time of day still makes me feel ill, as it did when I used to walk past a pub in London E 15 on my way to work at 06:30 only to see several milk floats outside while the milkos were inside 'having a few'. Although my chief says there's nowt like breakfast beer, he's welcome to it - and so is anyone else!

The license is to open at 7am. Yes they'll serve you a beer if you want one but then it's not just beer its food as well.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Many years ago, way before 24 hour opening, the KC had an early licence to serve the post office workers coming off shift. Meat, fish market pubs were also licenced from 1.00am.
