Just wondered if anyone else heard a loud bank / rumble on the 27th December around 13:20?
I have spoken to people in Greenham and Donnington and also here in Thatcham that also heard it?
Any others heard it or know the cause?

Yes, I did and checked my watch which showed 13:18 - thought at first it might have been thunder but the sky looked all wrong for that. No knowledge as to cause

I was walking over the bridge on Northbrook Street and heard it so did many others around me.

It sounded like a lorry reversing into a large metal bin so that's what I assumed it was.

Sounds like some top notch NWN investigative journalism is needed here then!

It was me and Biker1 finally meeting up. laugh.gif

Seriously though, it would be good to bring this mystery to a close if possible.

Well a Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said yesterday (Tuesday): "We have no knowledge of any incident."

Right, so we all imagined it?

Well that proves there was something, when those lying bar stewards deny anything.

Yes I live North of Chieveley t/wards Welford and went outside when it happened as thought someone's roof had caved in.
Definitely finger of suspicion is aimed at USAF Welford, because that's who run it not RAF; their FOI may be more revealing than our MOD is. blink.gif

Worryingly some time ago the MOD decided to stop protecting this high security/risk location with armed MOD Police, and subcontracted to unarmed civilian force.
I recall USAF Greenham had both MOD Police and heavily armed & visible Rambo equipped American service personnel; Richard Benyon challenged this quite rightly but they didn't reverse the change.
This base & what it contains needs to be better managed inside perhaps, and definitely better protected.

Besides the obvious current threat the Guardian reader league like to protest/invade from time to time;
however, as I recall Welford is now one of the many "protected zones" where demos not permitted;
most are unknown/secret apparently eg near House of Commons.

Perhaps Richard Benyon might be able to get an answer?

I think he may have been trying...

All quite worrying really...don't West Berks residents have a right to know anything?

Think I'll check it out the site on Google Earth.

Probably unrelated but why are we also subject to so many low-flying night-time Chinook flights too?

WITH MORE TO COME SOON

Quite often they appear at night to hover around the Police Aerial in Stanmore, at The Reservoir; assume use as landmark.

Welford also has it's own M4 exit between J13+14 as many will know, but of course it's not identified as such. ohmy.gif

Explosions in ammo depots are very bad news indeed. This is one that happened a long while ago, not too far from Welford, and seldom mentioned. As you can see, the cause was never definitely determined.

Don't forget that they are based locally. Wockas (and Wocka training) are based at Odiham near Basingstoke - so I would expect to see nigh flying training on a pre-set route/circuit.

Well, judging by the power of the explosion, an alleged plume of smoke in the Welford area and everyone in denial, we can only assume that this was ammunition explosion. If so, it is regrettable that no-one feels fit to maker a statement. It can only fuel suspicion.

Perhaps the M.O.D. can claim to have no knowledge of 'goings-on' at Welford precisely because they no longer deploy security personnel there? Comforting to think the base may now be being guarded by Group 4 security or similar sad.gif .

Since the contents of the base (one of the largest munition stores in Europe) are considered so sensitive as to fall under the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act (2005), I am disturbed to realise that I (and probably most other residents of West Berks) knew nothing about the presence of this on our doorstep, nor of the downgraded level of security which has been agreed to.

If this 'explosion' did emanate from Welford, I think we should be told and re-assured about safety, both from the ammunition itself and any possible terrorist threats.
