Quick factoid, the UK pays some 13.5% of all EU contributions, countries like Malta pay 0.07%. which is possibly why they don't want us to go.

Not to worry, those nice germans will happily take Malta under it's wing..........nearly 80 years later than planned but one should never give up on a good idea.

Do you know we pay less to the EU than the overseas aid budget.

That one is easily rectified. Doubt to many have the guts to implement it though.

We send aid to India, a place that has a modern army, nuclear bombs and a satellite in orbit around mars. But we still plus money into it. They must be laughing themselves sick.

Between foreign aid and supporting various semi derelict European countries we give away almost £27b. Does anyone have any ideas on what else we could do with that money? Anybody?

Membership of the EU cost £13bn last year but our exports were £300bn. As a man who runs a business, wouldn’t you say that’s a good return?

And our imports? As a business? Buying in more than I sold? No, that wouldn't be a good return. Like buying a store club card for £13b that allows me to buy stuff at a higher price.

We’ve always had a negative balance of trade.

Which is called? Yup, going broke. One final piss off is that I've worked out that I'll be working this month for free just to pay for benefit scroungers and other people's children, the national debt, international aid and our contribution to the EU. However I'm sure Newres will be along shortly with an 18 page report and some graphs showing me how a bilateral trade agreement with Latvia for reindeer skin actually means I get most of this back. Because data.

You make the mistake of seeing the UK as a single business. But anyway we do better on services so from memory from A level Economics we have a just about positive balance of payments. Services and trade combined.

When was the last time we had a positive one? I don’t think we’ve ever had one but I could be wrong.

You are. We had one back in the early Thatcher reign (1980 to 1982)

So one in 50 years. laugh.gif

So actually I was right. Shock! Horror! Historically we run a trade deficit.

Was there not one in Blairs first tenure, or was that down to Brown's creative accountancy? tongue.gif
