QUOTE (Turin Machine @ Feb 26 2019, 09:21 PM) To the luddite on here, could you explain the virtue of having a vehicle that is capable of ascending snowdon at 100 mph when most of the time it will be sat outside the school gates belching out nitrogen for the little people to inhale and when it does get on the open road it will follow the car in front at a painfully "slow" 40? The fact that it is GERMAN has no bearing on my comment in the slightest.

Err, you obviously have never met TM, and his boat trailer, and his wife's horsebox etc, etc. Plus it's diesel, plus it's a V8! In these days of plonking a 1.0 ltr in a car and pretending to do everything it's ( metaphorically) a breath of fresh air.

QUOTE (newres @ Feb 27 2019, 04:24 PM) Going back some years I had a diesel hire car and I’ll always remember driving along a lane in Bray with the window open and hearing the diesel sound reflecting back off a wall. I had a BMW 320 at the time with the lovely 6 cylinder engine and I vowed never to own a diesel car. Fast forward 20 years and you can’t get anything else! I’ve never been keen on diesel and I never understood the push for them. For that reason the VW fails to excite.
Oh to add. A diesel Jag! I couldn’t believe it. Heresy I thought at the time. Modern diesel's come a long way, a nice V6 is quiet and smooth, plus all the torque and the economy makes it a winner. My friend's got an Audi biturbo V6 diesel, quicker than the S6 and he doesn't have to stop at every fuel station that comes over the horizon.

Yeah, but imagine where petrol engines would be now if they were invested in, but I take your point.

Yes indeedy, try pulling almost a ton of trailer and horseflesh out of a muddy field and see how far you get with a 1 ltr petrol fiesta. Not far I can tell you. Or as you indicated, pulling 24' of boat up a slippy launch ramp.
