Just to add. I no longer wear one. I used to before the recent wars and attend the ceremony but I won’t now as I see it now as a symbol of support of our recent wars. I’d be tempted to wear a white one but instead I just won’t wear one anymore. Nothing to do with it being a fascist symbol but it’s a shame right wing groups have begun to appropriate it.

For me it symbolises the conscripted WW dead, but I realise money raised now goes to other recipients too. I think Fisk’s words are inflammatory and somewhat presumptive.

I must admit that "Poppy Day" seems to have been hijacked by the commercial moguls . Like Easter eggs and christmas tree decorated , their appearance gets earlier year on year . I wear my poppy on the day and that's it , but not to wear one on some missguided impression that it somehow glorifies our involvement in armed conflict is a little short sighted . No one , apart from the odd Millwall FC supporter , wants to go to war but are forced into the position by bad people in charge , ( sounds like Trump , I apologise ), who wish to impress their power by any means .
Buy your poppy and wear it ,not so much in pride, more a recognition of the futility of war and it's victims .

Has anyone said it was fascist? My post drew attention to the fact the left were calling it racist, not fascist. I suggest you go back a page and reread my post before you start flinging groundless and silly accusations at me.

I don’t believe the author of the premise you refer to (Fisk: the poppy is racist) could legitimately claim to speak for the left. Children on this forum believe me to be ‘left’; however, I usually wear a poppy, so it is not entirely true.

The poppy is and should be a mark of respect for the fallen, for the blood spilt and young lives lost in defense of our country, to mark the blood soaked butchers bill that comes with sacrifice. Not some token of a tawdry attempt by silly and thoughtless fools to turn it to political advantage. And the poppies should always be red, as were the flowers that bloomed at Flanders.

Poppy wearing is by its nature a political force, but not all military actions taken by a professional volunteer force is something some are proud of.

Laying down your life for a fellow human being is an honourable thing, but soldiers are not the only casualty in war or military conflict.

I wear a poppy lest I forget, not for any other reason.

And I have no problem at all with people wearing a poppy. It's just for me it would symbolise a support for Blair's wars as the modern charities have adopted the poppy as a symbol (it seems to me).

I honestly have never heard it suggested that the poppy is a symbol of racism or fascism, but personally I'm uncomfortable with it being used by Britain First as a political football.

In agreement , ( bit of a collectors item ) ; but remember our armed forces did not go into Iraq because they wanted to , they got sent by our democratically elected government . No one thinks it a good idea in hindsight , indeed it was a very bad idea , but wars are very seldom started by the people who fight them so to those who fell in any conflict we should salute their memory .

Labour want to sully and despoil all concepts of loyalty to Britain, honour and service. To them, anything British is bad.

Wearing a poppy and the associated Festival of Remembrance and Remembrance Sunday do not support any war.
The clue is in the word "remembrance"!

This is a forum of views and debate is a substantial part of that.
Some of the views of others will ignite some form of anger. Especially when covering subjects such as war and disrespect for the casualties of war.

I think more and more people are starting to see the folly in military ventures. It is one thing to respond to a direct threat, but another to know we voted for people to endorse a campaign that has killed hundreds of thousands of poor people.
